I don't doubt that young people today are less self-sufficient than previous generations. I'd imagine it's at least in part a result of "helicopter parenting" which has been in ever increasing prevalence since the 90s. The concept of allowing kids freedom to roam and free play has become less and less accepted over time. When a child or teenager is out doing things on their own, even if it's just in their backyard or a few streets from home, they're required to think a little more and problem solve on their own, even if it's for something minor. Problem solving is a skill just like anything else and the more you work on it, the better you'll be. A kid who throws their ball on the other side of a fence while playing be themselves will try and figure out how to get it back. A kid who throws their ball on the other side of a fence with a parent nearby will ask their parent to get it back for them. That adds up over time.

THAT BEING SAID...

quote:

A quarter of Gen Z adults – aged 18 to 27 – said they would not change a light bulb themselves because using a stepladder could be dangerous, while one in five fear the bulb could be “too hot”.

There's just no way this is true one out of every four 18 - 27 year olds won't change a light bulb? If that suddenly became true then there'd be a billion dollar "door dash" style lighbulb changing industry tomorrow. This article sounds more like "back in my day!" porn for the aging than anything based in reality.

I get shite at the office for changing my own oil in my truck. The guys brag to me they only speed 150$ and it's done during their lunch break

I spent 52.85 for 10 quarts of oil and filter and brought them my old oil. Took 30 minutes on a Saturday.

I think people just value their time moreso than their money.

The real market for this are elderly people who can no longer climb a stepladder, move furniture, etc.

My uncle retired and became a handy man. He never worried about money.

first of all you can't get freon unless you're a licensed AC person

If I lived in a city this sounds like an easy way to make a living. 1,500 a year to fix simple problems for helpless yutes lol

I thought my oldest was a dumbass when he couldn't get his new brakes to bleed. I showed up and he had the left and right installed backwards so the bleeder was on the bottom. I was like...damn...never seen that before lol

This is true with a lot of younger people, especially the ones making pretty good money but working a lot.

I had a small side business that did painting, minor electrical, odd jobs etc for many years in Brooklyn NY. Lots of guys in bands that needed some extra money were doing the jobs.

You definitely get some super easy jobs the person just doesn't wanna figure out like a new coffee table that you just have to turn over and hand screw the 4 legs in or a door that just needs to be cleaned in a couple of places cleaned with a magic eraser.

The light bulb thing seems completely made up. Anyone with that kind of money who doesn't want to change a light bulb just slips the super of their building a $20 to do it.

I’m gen x but work with many gen z and most of the younger guys I work with are no different than we were at their age, fixing trucks, hunting, etc.

These guys are the exception to the norm though. In this area, they tend to learn how to do things from their fathers. But in large population centers of the country that’s not the case, either bc the father doesn’t pass it along or bc the father never learned either

If this is a situation where people just don’t want to, have the money and would rather pay someone else to do it, I don’t have an issue with it, even if it’s basic stuff like changing light bulbs.

However, doesn’t sound like this at all. These sound like people with parents who raised them to be pretty useless:

quote:

When asked why they could not change a simple ceiling light bulb, a quarter of Gen Z adults worried it would be “too hot”.

Two thirds of Millennials said it was because they would “not want to mess around with electrics”.

A fifth of both age groups claimed it was because it “could be dangerous to use a ladder”.

There is no way that headline is accurate unless it happened one time and it’s the child of a billionaire.

Article actually says they spend £1,300 per year on tasks like that not pay some dude that amount of money to change one light bulb

My God we have two generations of young adults that are absolutely useless. And I am a millennial. Not being able to even change a freaking light bulb is about as embarrassing as it gets. For a guy that is. The parents should be beyond ashamed of themselves for raising their kids to be useless.

And everyone wonders why the elites don’t want these fricks owning anything. They don’t want to deal with a few generations of unmaintained urban and suburban blight which will invariably become ghetto over time.

Our cars sent us texts when it got cold this past week to take our cars to the dealership because the tire pressure dropped. Really?
