Normally, the picture of the object in question is the gotcha part of a news story like this. It's as if to say "look at what these idiots thought was a bomb." In this case, it was very conspicuously left out. We didn't get a picture until right wing sites started posting it. Ergo, numerous people have to have made the conscious decision to omit it.
Because it looks like a fricking bomb.
Also, the consistent use of the same terms (such as "pencil box") across a wide spectrum of articles is, IMO, intentionally misleading and indicates that the articles are being written from bullet points generated from a central source.
ETA: and again, the painfully unimpressive nature of the "home-made clock" is also a red flag.

Dad doesn't seem like a deadbeat parent who's not involved in his son's schooling. Dad allowed him to bring that to school knowing full well what situation would arise from toting around something that could be easily construed as a bomb.
He was complicit in this act in one way, shape, or form.

I'm sure it's been stated already but you have to be some kind of special level of stupid to bring what looks a bomb to school.
And yes I know that briefcase digital clocks are all the rage these days. I bet that piece of junk would go for a $1,000 at a garage sale.

He did give an answer. He said it was a clock. In fact he willfully showed it to his first period teacher as a clock.
If this was some plan to fool the school and world, why would he willfully show it to his first period teacher as a clock? I'll await a rational answer
