This is a video of a recording of a Civil War veteran in 1947. The guy in the video was born in 1846 and fought in Virginia under James Longstreet. Pretty interesting to hear a person from that time period speak 160 years later after the fact.

The last part was very interesting. He said the South did not fight for the preservation or extension of slavery. They were fighting for states rights.

Any particular right they had in mind? Maybe just states rights as a whole?

It’s pretty neat to hear people from that era speak. Little things like the way in which he expressed how he had felt kindly toward General Grant, and how he felt no special hatred toward Mr. Lincoln or any Federal soldier. The accent is tops though. It sounds so regal.

I’ve read many snippets from former slaves and soldiers alike from that era, both north and south and none of them were as bitter or nasty as they are today, and hell, they lived it. I suppose witnessing a half a decade of blood and guts flowing throughout this land has a way of saying enough is enough, and it’s time to heal.

Straight from the source. The war was all about states rights. Slavery was a very minor cause, if one at all. We all know the North was just as bad as the South when it came to the treatment of blacks, and to be honest, it sounds like from this guy that the blacks didn’t have it too bad back then even with slavery going on. Shows how much propaganda hammered into people for decades can completely change the perception of something.

That oldd guy was surprisingly well spoken for a man of 101 years old. I enjoyed listening to him.

That’s crazy to think how much the world changed during his life. From muskets or I guess early rifles to nukes. Cars, electricity, TV, air conditioning. Dude lived through two world wars.

It really is significant. I realized the other day that my grandmother was born over 20 years closer to the end of the Civil War than my son was born after WW2.

The amount of technological and social change in less than 1.5 centuries is amazing.

Most good. Some bad.

The Civil War was much more complex than just slavery regardless of the revisionist and reductionist history that you believe in. If it was about slavery, then why didn't they free the slaves until 1865? If Lincoln was so abolitionist, why did the Emancipation Proclamation not apply to Northern states too?

I just gave it a full listen. Thank you for sharing this raw piece of history.

I’m digesting it now. My first reaction is...
He was just a boy.

How many of us knew anything at 16?
On the cusp of manhood.
The wisest kind of stupid.
There’s a reason they conscript young men into the army before the old.
Like soft clay.
Only knowing what we’re told in a way we now can’t even fathom.
I heard no Hate or malice in that old man’s words.
Just a pawn caught up in a game of chess played many levels above his shoulders.

And a sentiment strikes my mind.

I don't know, maybe Jefferson Davis said which right they specifically wanted to preserve.
