One thing I always go back to is that Lincoln was not on the ballot whatsoever in the states that eventually seceded and formed the Confederacy. Yet, he was still elected President despite not even being a candidate in the South. It was a humbling experience to an entire region of the US that they ultimately had zero national political power. It offended their sense of honor and they saw their way of live including slavery at the mercy of the Northern banker/industrialist. Their tempers flared and they went to war.

Pardon me, crazy4lsu, I see that you’re a different person than the one who made the initial Sumter claims, you came in later, didn’t notice that on my phone.

Didn’t mean to presume you held the position of someone else. Your initial beef was with the peace commission, which I think we agree to take at face value.

Slavery was definitely a factor but not the only one, it was a battle over the entire direction of the country, and who was going to decide it.

For 99% of the people fighting it it was simply because the other side attacked them and they had no choice,

Just wanted to say I've enjoyed reading the back-n-forth. The details around Charleston have been fascinating.

The revionists are the ones who think slavery has nothing to do with the war. When every issue that led to succession was a result of slavery.
The one argument in their favor was the taxation on raw materials but not on manufactured goods. This meant the south paid taxes on cotton but the north didn't on textiles. That was the most logical states rights issue. Lincoln not being in the ballot and still winning was an issue. Why was his election an issue? What did they think he was going to do? All the rest are fallout from the Missouri compromise and the rise of the Abolishinist or Repubican party.

Also I don't think the union intended to end slavery by starting the war. They wanted to preserve the union. But they also wanted to ensure slavery could not expand and new slaves zilch be imported.

Slavery is mentioned WAY more than tariffs in the seccessions.
