Cigarette butt leads to murder charge in Oklahoma cold case

Prosecutors filed a first-degree murder charge against an Oklahoma inmate in connection with a 35-year-old stabbing death in Lincoln County after DNA from a cigarette found at the crime scene matched, Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter announced on Monday. Earl Wayne Wilson, 55, was charged in the 1985 stabbing death of Paul Aikman, whose body was discovered at a rest stop on the Turner Turnpike.
DNA evidence collected from a cigarette butt at the crime scene was linked to Wilson after a match in a national DNA database, Hunter said.
"Advances in DNA technology are allowing authorities to take another look at these difficult cases," Hunter said. "Just because cases go cold doesn't mean someone shouldn't be held responsible, even after three decades.
Wilson is currently incarcerated at the North Fork Correctional Center in Sayre for a sexual battery conviction, prison records show.

That’s why it’s important to flick any and all cigg butts out of the window on the interstate after you’ve gotten the vehicle up past 70mph. Preferably out of the sunroof.

A cigarette butt led to the capture of a serial killer in Louisiana. The car of a couple he killed was recovred and the officer mentioned to the son of the couple that there were cigarettes smoked in the car without tipping the ash. The son remembered a former employee who smoked like that.

what if he just threw this cigarette butt out the window as he drove by. then this murder happened right next to the cigarette butt.

I mean... the national DNA database is well known
if you're arrested and booked into jail... your fingerprints are taken and stored in a database
same with DNA... if your DNA is taken during an investigation... either through your agreement or through a warrant... it's stored in a database

If I were on a jury I'd have a really hard time voting to convict someone based on DNA. I can see where testimony from a DNA expert might be one part of an overall case, but this shite where some molecules on a cigarette butt match some thing from 20 years ago (or vice-versa) does not really stand on its own, in my mind. It's just one guy saying he saw something in a microscope and did some math. He's human and subject to fooling himself (or lying) just like anyone else.

I'll preface this by saying my training is in genetics and ecology.
The double helix structure of DNA is one of the most stable organic molecules we know. And you can't see it under a microscope, you separate the DNA sections by putting the molecules in a matrix and separating it electrically. And they just don't run one test and that's. The run multiple sections of our DNA to see how they match with each other. Everyone's is unique to them and is way more reliable than say finger prints.

The DNA hit just lead them to the suspect. They also had a partial handprint to compare and that’s what sealed it. This article just doesn’t state that part.

I think it’s easier to not kill people. Maybe, I’m not really sure tho
Much easier flicking every butt out of the sunroof. Just as a habit, over time.
