These are annual cicadas. When they talk about an emergence they are talking about periodical cicadas that emerge in the Spring. These are what they call "dog day" cicadas because they emerge in the dog days of Summer.

Heard them up here last night. I guess we got enough rain to soften the soil so they could come up and out.

Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed

I looked it up and saw no major swarms for this year, but they were crawling all over my backyard 2 nights ago still in their shells.

Sigh. Yes, I get this. 2024 was supposed to be the year. Didn’t happen in Georgia. Seems this is the year for Georgia at least in my region.

I just noticed it about a week ago and I spend a fair amount of time on my back deck at night.

But these are entirely different species of cicadas whose emergence are entirely different.

The lineage of these cicadas emerged last year and will emerge again next year. This just means that last year's bunch in your area had a better breeding year.

Not Georgia, but this is the most significant cicada season since I was a kid in the 1970s.

One of my dogs has decided that eating them is pretty much his favorite thing.

I figure it’s a combination of the size and the sound it makes.
