At the same time so many people are on antipsychotic meds that "mental illness" has become watered down in ways.
If I recall correctly, the Aurora shooter had gone off his meds and was self-medicating. You see this a lot in mentally ill patients when the best that we can provide them in terms of treatment are meds whether the side effects are not exactly optimal (i.e. sexual dysfunction, suicidal thoughts, etc) or they cannot afford those meds.
You also learn in psychology that some illnesses like schizophrenia are woefully under studied. A lot of the antipsychotics used to treat schizophrenia are some of the same ones that were introduced in the 50s. Add to it that the number of psychiatric facilities in this country has reduced significantly in the last few decades due to cuts in funding, it doesn't take much to figure out why we have such an issue with people with mental illness.

even if it went into law people would bury/hide what they have or build them. There are as many guns as there are people. Plus It's not hard to forge a rifle and bullets.

Do you think these criminals have any intention of following these new 'gun laws'?

Lanza and the Aurora guy would have both been lobotomized in the 50s. Bring it back. Lobotomies save lives.

There are more guns than people in the US.
They'll never go away.
They'll never go away.

No, you're right, we can't stop it. Just accept mentally ill mass murderers as part of our wonderful vibrant society.

Because that's totally what I said.

not a fan of that either.

Anyone have a link for Charleston police scanners?
Posted on 6/18/15 at 1:05 am to Ostrich
I think they were telling earlier that North Charleston was the only one you could access online and it's not necessarily "in the area".

Don't count on it. This was planned well and that dude is gone. He might be in Georgia by now.

He's probably on a delta flight right now.

Good majority of schizophrenics are non-violent and there's definitely some nuances to when someone should be committed. Civil liberties already being "fricked" shouldn't send us further down that rabbit hole.
That said, the conversation on addressing mental health in this country isn't as "sexy" as some other causes but should be at the top of the list of what we're addressing. Which is incredibly sad because mental illness doesn't discriminate. It's a human issue, not a race or gender issue.

Mental illness is too icky for some people to accept or discuss.
There's nothing wrong, at all, with having a mental illness. The problem is in getting treatment and acceptance. There's still a huge stigma against having a mental illness, as though the victim of the illness chose to have it. So rather than call it a mental illness, we either celebrate it as something other than that or push it under the rug, depending on the situation.
