Maybe the solution is to go back to making it easier to have mentally ill people committed to state care. Civil liberties are already fricked. I've met schizophrenics and people who are just hopelessly fricked in the head. All it takes is one of them going off the rails to destroy a bunch of families, and traumatize an entire community.

The Dallas shooting thread proved that a number of people have an agenda or a one track mind. I'm not shocked by anything posted here.

Guess I'm just naive and overly optimistic. Can only speak for myself, though, in regards to my thoughts on the shooter. Carry on.

Good majority of schizophrenics are non-violent and there's definitely some nuances to when someone should be committed. Civil liberties already being "fricked" shouldn't send us further down that rabbit hole.
That said, the conversation on addressing mental health in this country isn't as "sexy" as some other causes but should be at the top of the list of what we're addressing. Which is incredibly sad because mental illness doesn't discriminate. It's a human issue, not a race or gender issue.

Here's an easy way to practice empathy for those too callous to do so anymore.
Imagine it was your mother, father, grandparents, just going down to Wednesday night service, and some piece of shite walks in and kills everybody there.
There you go. Work with that. Try it. Empathy.
Perhaps that should be the first reaction rather than running every thing that happens through a political filter first.

This country has a massive problem with discussing mental illness. Not saying that this situation has anything to do with it. But the Aurora & Sandy Hook shooting are perfect examples.

Would Lanza's mother have agreed to have him committed if that had been an option? Or would she have insisted that he be treated with "equality" in order that he not be "stigmatized"?
That's a good question.
That's a good question.

We can't even treat people who want to mutilate their genitalia and play pretend as mentally ill hazards. They are instead celebrated.
Mental illness is too icky for some people to accept or discuss.

Definitely didn't hear him say that. Unless he was talking off camera to people, which is possible. Seems like they were keeping things tighter to their chest though.

A big problem with that is its hard to imagine what illnwas motivates a guy to shoot 20 children dead or walk into a church/theater and open fire. And the anger from to such events makes people say "they may not be right in the head, but frick them anyways". At the same time so many people are on antipsychotic meds that "mental illness" has become watered down in ways.

Yeah but a lot of these guys arent diagnosed as mentally ill.
Look at McVeigh. Dude was fricked up but not ever given an official diagnosis of anything medical before the bombings.
He just hated the government so much that he decided to commit mass murder.

Problem number one is that there's no objective truth left in our culture.
Insanity defenses can go the frick away, while we're on the subject. There's a similar piece of shite in Colorado who, regardless of his "alleged capacity", should be punished for similar heinous actions. Didn't know right from wrong when he murdered? Perhaps he'll understand the concept when they insert the IV into his arm in the execution chamber.

Would be sad to see metal detectors in doors of churches.
Posted on 6/18/15 at 12:55 am to JBeam
Definitely. We don't do enough to combat this.
People are becoming zombies on meds which is worsening the situations.
No one is interested in solving the issues anymore. They want to prescribe something and move on.
That's a generalization but I've seen it first hand.

Could always, ya know...get rid of the guns

Mothers aren't really the best people to ask if their kids are bad / crazy.
Look at most murders in NOLA. All those kids are good kids according to their moms

Even if you could snap your fingers and remove all guns, you would not solve the etiologic factor.
