True and I don't understand why they have statues of him up in the U.S.

...then they came for Christopher Columbus and I did not speak out because I was not an explorer, navigator, and colonizer.

couple of internet badasses up in here dropping knowledge unheard of history on the OT. Greatly appreciated.
no shite he didn't technically discover North America, but for the purpose of why we erected statues of the man, let's say he did. simpletons.

I will say this...if anyone deserves to have their monuments removed, it's probably Christopher Columbus.

No shite.

Not only did he not discover America, but he massacred the locals where he did accidentally land.

Maybe don't tell people to pick up a history book when you make an incorrect statement about history?

Also your above response only gives fuel to the removal argument. If they were erected for something that didn't happen, then why is it even there?

He was instrumental in establishing the viability (profitability) of North American trade routes. Europe wouldn't have given two shits about settling the Americas if they couldn't have made money on it.

Sort of like Edison and the lightbulb - he wasn't the first to turn electricity into light, but he was the first to prove it was viable (and profitable).

Take of that what you will.

"According to a plaque, The Italian-American Organizations of Greater Houston donated the statue to the city in 1992."

ohh good lord.

because the people vandalizing this statue or screaming for other statues to be taken down don't give a shite about historical accuracy, they are looking to whine, bitch, and moan that some white man, who's been in the ground for centuries, somehow caused all the problems in their life today. which is a lazy bullshite excuse, something most of them excel at.

His fourth expedition was the first European exploration (other than the vikings) to set foot on North America... so for the purposes of colonization, he did.

guess it's his fault for discovering North America, thus starting the white man's reign of terror ???

Actually he didn't even discover North America, so that argument doesn't work for them either.
