This is much more gray then a lot of people are willing to recognize. They did an autopsy of his brain and figuratively speaking it was jellified. Completely destroyed likely by concussions and steroid use.
It doesn't make what he did any better or more acceptable, but it gives a bit of context that he maybe wasn't the evil monster people immediately act like he was. He was irreparably and dangerously broken.

I remember back in the day there was a WCW show in BR. During the show my buddy was heckling Steven Regal. Regal said something back but we couldn’t hear what he said. After it was over we went to Hooters and were eating and in walks Regal, Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Dave Taylor, and I forget who else. So anyway after we finished eating my buddy wanted to ask Regal what he said to him. He went over to their table and we were like, “Awwww shite.” So he says, “Excuse me Mr. Regal, but during you match tonight you said something to me and I couldn’t quite hear it. Do you mind repeating it?” Regal responded, “I told you to eat some celery you fat bastard.”
