I do NOT recommend Dick Van Dyke. His Cockney accent is TERRIBLE.

Figure out your flue tile size, and buy a kit off Amazon. Chimney sweeps make their money selling "repairs". Just pull off your cap, shine a flashlight down to look for obstructions, run a filtered shop-vac at the bottom, lay out a tarp in front of you fireplace, and put on a dust mask. After you sweep it, shine a flashlight down the flue and look for cracks in the flue tile or disconnects on a pre-fab system. Also, if it's masonry, check the profile joint (mortar joint that butts up to firebrick), and look to make sure there are no glaring voids in your smoke chamber.

This is the prime chimney sweep time of year. It’s like trying to find a roofer after a hurricane. If you don’t already have one on retainer you may as well wait until May.

Some people in my subdivision in Houston had it done and was $60.

If you do it yourself just watch the wasp nests.

I deeply apologize if mentioning Houston creates grimacing and discomfort for you. Just wanted to point out the cost and my location.

Whoever you hire, make sure they can step in time, step in time; never need a reason, never need a rhyme.

They showed up very late, their inspection was a joke. In total they spent less than 5 minutes doing the inspection. Literally all he did was look up the chimney to see that the flue opened and closed. He did not get on the roof to check the crown, cap, bricks, mortar or flashing. They told me my firebox had major damage, had to be replaced, and was unsafe. They gave me an estimate on the repairs in excess of $10,000.

I did not feel right about it, and called another guy whose name I can't recall, and he did a much more thorough inspection, and told me my firebox was pristine, but said some mortar needed to be re-pointed on the stack.
