This will not matter one bit. People who receive the UBI will still be resentful of those from whom paid for the UBI.

You cannot legislate people into prosperity. Poor people are poor because they make poor choices.

It doesn’t get anymore complex then that.

Essentially paying childlike people to not commit crimes.

This is a horrible idea.
Rewarding shithead people in shithole areas.

Cash advance tellers will be the real winners. Get your money now at a 250% interest rate.

JG Wentworth will need to enter the UBI market.

Hilariously stupid. I could imagine a distant future where technology has eliminated so many jobs that a universal basic income has become a defensible proposition but I think Chicago is jumping the gun a bit. I don’t think a lack of jobs is why so many people in Chicago are living in poverty.

And giving people $500/month won’t change that at all.

Agree with many of you. This is simply Chicago throwing in the towel. They refuse to police the impoverished areas.

Definitely the most cost-effective “light at the end of the tunnel” approach. Once they’ve all killed themselves off, the city can select its next 1,000 recipients. Lather, rinse, repeat...

Does anyone think we won't need UBI at some point in the future?

The closest to a free market way to get to UBI in an AI/Technological revolution is adjust overtime laws and vacation laws enough to push companies to hire more workers instead of overworking the remaining staff they have. This can be done slowly.

Start 1.5x at 36 hours/week, 2 weeks vacation mandatory to start...keep on working it down from there. Go to 2x at 36 hours/week, then down to 32, etc...

Eventually you end up with say, technology eliminating 50% of all required workforce hours out there. Instead of having 50% of the population working 40+ hours/week and getting taxed to oblivion to feed the other 50%, you have 100% of the population working 20 hours/week with normal taxation.

So, instead of the working people donating their hard earned money to help the non-working class, they give up their work time (and gain a whole lot of free time in return). And if an individual is that valuable that they cannot be on a short work week, they get rewarded handsomely.

This will never happen. You vastly underestimate the amount of people in this country that have zero interest working even one hour a week.

I read that 80% of NFL athletes are in financial distress or bankrupt within 2 years of retirement. That's what happens when you give at risk people millions.

I'm not sure why people think lesser amounts will be any different. Dumb is dumb.
