Inmates in the Cook County Jail can now order pizza delivered directly to their cells. The medium-security prison has allowed pre-trial detainees to use their commissary to purchase pizza cooked on the premise.
quote:
The pizzas cost between $5 and $7 and the selection of six pies includes classics like plain margherita and sausage.

“This isn’t coddling the detainees,” says sheriff spokeswoman Cara Smith who added that the sales will go towards funding the program itself.

Smith says a food truck serving food cooked by inmates is also in the works, although it’s only in the developmental stage.

What's the problem here? They have to use their own money and it's pizza that's cooked in a frickin prison.
If they were allowing prisoners to opt out of meals and order Papa Johns instead at taxpayer expense, then yeah, I'd be upset for the taxpayers who were footing the bill.
ETA: obligatory "journalism is going in the shitter" gripe.

I believe the word the writer was looking for is "premises." Get your shite together Fox News.

They're still considered innocent and using their own money. I see nothing wrong with this.

Or as we law-abiding citizens call it... Room Service.

Family can call and put money on inmates accounts so to be honest, I'm not really bothered by it.

Dude, Angola makes a dam good shrimp po boy that inmates can buy with their commissary.

This is actually a pretty good idea. The inmates are paying for their own pizza from commissary accounts that friends/family of the inmate put money into. And they're attempting to train inmates to help them find jobs upon release.

The “Recipe for Change” program run by local restaurant owner, Chef Bruno Abate, looks to teach inmates skills that they can use when they are released

How? The pizzas are being cooked in the jail facility by inmates....not delivered from outside.
