I long for the day that the media reports the racial breakdown for statistics for reports like this.

It's a city with 3 million people and a metro area of 10 million people. It's not even top 10 most violent places in the Midwest. It's not even the most violent place in Illinois.
There's actually a 50/50 shot that where you're from is a more violent place than Chicago is per capita. A lot of Tennessee, as you seem to be from, is a whole lot more violent than Chicago.

You are correct, don't understand why Chicago gets all the bad press. Memphis has a higher per capita murder rate than Chicago, New Orleans and Jackson MS have a rates 50% higher than Chicago. The highest murder rate per capita in the U.S. is St Louis, and it is twice that of Chicago.

Illinois has very restrictive gun laws. Chicago's are more restrictive.

Even 15 years ago we did not get off the train in those areas without an armed railroad cop at our side. Cab doors always locked and slouched down in the seat so as to not provide a target if stopped or moving.

When I see these statistics it appears to me that black lives really don’t matter. At least not to other black people.

You’re average college educated person living in Lakeview and working in the loop can go decades without ever entering a bad part of town.
If you aren’t buying or selling drugs or in a gang or live by those who are, the chances of you getting shot are pretty close to 0.0%
