Chevrolet is building the Silverado ZR2 for extreme off roading

This truck will be similar to the Ram TRX and Ford Raptor, but likely with a more advanced suspension. Chevrolet has actually been racing this truck out in the open in many off road courses for over a year, where it's disguised as a standard Silverado Trail Boss.
The rumor is that Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 will offer an option of 2 V8s - a 6.2L 420 horsepower variant as standard, with an optional supercharged 700+ horsepower monster borrowed from the upcoming Corvette Z06.
The Silverado ZR2 will also feature the highly regarded DSSV shocks from the Colorado ZR2 and fully locking front and rear differentials (something that the Raptor and TRX both lack, but is already available in the Colorado ZR2).

The Tahoe and Suburban are also likely getting a version of this ZR2 trim package, which will likely push their price well over $95,000.

Since 2019, there have been reports that Chevrolet has been working on a full-size answer to the Ford Raptor and Ram TRX, which were further stoked by a factory-modifed race truck. Now we have spy photos of what seems to be a serious Chevy Silverado off-roader, which we will refer to as ZR2 like its little Colorado sibling.
The front offers the most clues to the truck's increased capabilities. The hood has a huge bulge of camouflage, which we suspect may hide a big cowl like that on the Colorado ZR2. The front bumper, particularly when compared to a Trail Boss prototype seen earlier, seems to be turned up more at the edges for better clearance around the tires. The ZR2 doesn't have the aerodynamic air dam either, which further aids clearance. Underneath is a deep and wide skid plate for protecting all the Silverado's vulnerable mechanical bits.
Another thing that makes it clear this is burlier than a Trail Boss is the ride height. It's clearly sitting higher, and the tires are significantly bigger. We can't make out a tire size in the photos, but we know that the Trail Boss so far has been equipped with 32-inch tires. We're betting the tires on this ZR2 are 35-inch units, putting it on par with the standard Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX.

The lengths they go to to hide the design of the car kind of crack me up. I'm not exactly a gear head but most modern trucks look so similar anyway to me that the fact that they hide what they look like from their competitors seems basically unnecessary.

I thought SIlverado's trail boss was their extreme off road package.

I agree.
That being said, this tester likely has the updated front end that will be on the 2022 Silverado. I think they are just trying to have a special event to debut it to the public this summer.

That'll look great in the plant parking lot.

On the Colorado, the ZR2 is the ultimate off roader (similar to the old S-10 pickup from the 1990s). The Colorado ZR2 is actually a solid basis for an overlanding rig. The Trail Boss is really just a a Z71 with a slight lift and blacked out wheels.
S-10 ZR2:
Colorado ZR2:
The Colorado ZR2 is even the basis for the new Infantry Squad Vehicle used by the US Military:
They've never actually made a ZR2 variant of Silverado before.

You need at least a Z71 to get through those potholes.

Will it be made out of real tornados?

How long until the plastic trim starts rattling?

It's wearing a giant Covid mask.

Does the tire size look disproportionate to the huge front end to anyone else?

That's just stupid for a fricking Chevy.

They are definitely wider and taller than the tires Silverado Trail Boss. Hard to tell about proportion with the giant Covid mask on the truck.

I'll take expensive "off road trucks" that won't ever be driven off road for a thousand Alex.

This deserves two pairs of truck nuts
