My youthful drinking turned into a problem decades down the road, so if I ever started again there’s probably nothing too cheap.

Speak for yourself. I've always lived by the mantra of, "Life is too short to drink cheap liquor."
If I couldn't afford at least middle shelf liquor, I'd just go with beer. I had some friends who would drink Aristocrat vodka when they were broke. It never failed that they ended up sick as dogs. No thanks, Jack Daniels and Absolut were the floor for me in those days. With beer, I wasn't as selective, but I still rarely bought Natty Ligt or the equivalent.

Upchucked a whole bottle of that shite into my sink at that old Elam Arms dorm at USM as a freshman. Can't stand it since.
ETA you had your own toilet at that place but I didn't make it.

In the dorm at USL, a brotha and me was scraping up change to get something to drink. He said that’s enough for a couple of fortys. He brought this back. It was wonderful and terrible at the same time. To this day if I get even a whiff of tequila I get nauseous.
That same year I got taken to a place in Lafayette for my 18th birthday. It was Tequila sunrise night. I woke up behind a building on campus I had never been. I think it was Barristers or something like that.

I'm that way with pretty much any gin. I suspect, though, that the night that caused that I would have been fine if a friend hadn't broken out a jar of God knows how high of a proof of actual moonshine. Before that I had been drinking gin. I think a chose poorly in drinking from that jar. That was 20ish years ago, and was the last time I actually puked from drinking.
