Put the wall switch in the off position. My mother-in-law screamed at my father-in-law for this, but it works.

there is the possibility the light has the hot wire coming to it directly from a junction box and the switch just completes the circuit. In that case, you can certainly still electrocute yourself with the light switch off.

This. I've come across that exact scenario before.

Finished the drill boys, thanks for all your help. I went ahead and flipped the switch, and it worked perfect

Go ahead and do it. You're clearly not smart enough for the rest of us to need to worry about your genes leaving the gene pool.

EDIT: Goddamnit. You're still here.

I wired a decent amount of our home after an extensive remodel. I was never comfortable working without the breaker off, especially on remodel work, even though I was testing wires as I went regardless. Finding a light where the hot is run to the light instead of the switch is plenty common enough to keep me from changing a light fixture without some way to verify the electricity is off at the actual light.

110V kills

I would be dead about a half dozen times if it did. It certainly wakes you up and your arm might tingle for 20 minutes but not death.

A breaker is a switch, that trips when too much amperage is used.

A switch is a switch that is manually turned off. Both cut power to the fixture.

A little bit of electrical knowledge is a dangerous thing.

'd disconnect the hot from the switch, but that's just me.

So you're gonna handle the hot wire on the switch to avoid handling the hot wire on the light fixture?

Just do what CP3 said
quote:

Turn switch off, verify with multimeter and change fixture

If someone ran the hot to the fixture and switched the neutral, the meter will tell you that. Disconnecting the hot at the switch does nothing that flipping the switch would not do except expose you to risk.

There is a big difference between a switch and breaker when it comes to turning off a circuit and working on that circuit. If you only turn off the switch, this may turn off the power to that particular fixture. It may be deceiving because in an apartment building the nuetral may be shared. If there is another fixture that is on and drawing current, you will definitely find out the hard way. And to those that dont think 120 volts can kill, its not the voltage. The current is what kills you. Electricity is nothing to play with.

Alcohol in your bloodstream raises your body's resistance. Have a couple or 3 beers and the electricity can't hurt you.
