If it is 15 years old and leaking Freon, it is time to put the old boy down

No doubt about it, had to get mine replaced in the summer of 2020. Stayed one night with no AC. I'd rather sleep with no heater when its cold than no AC when it is hot.

During the ice storm a few years ago we lost one "leg" of power so none of the 220 worked and half our outlets wouldn't work. We put a few space heaters on and they kept the house comfortable until Entergy and the electricians figured out the fubar and we replaced what needed to be replaced. Seriously, it was mid 60's in the house when it was not above freezing for days, I think it was just 3 heaters and a 2200ish sf house.

Blessing in disguise...
After the first, the new AC units will have to meet the new green BS ratings which will add 20-30% to the cost

A big black iron pot filled with water and set to a boil will help put off some heat and hold it for a bit

The electric radiators do amazing. Keep heat down in rest of house and just run those in bedrooms.

Hadn’t considered this, but you’re right.

My wife wants to get heater fixed. 3000k was the quote 2 years ago. I said "not gonna happen" not paying 3k to use something 3 times a year.

Replace the whole thing now. Prices go up in January. What BTU?. We replaced our old HVAC system with a Rheem 14 SEER. I think new units will have to be 15 SEER.

Yeah…I believe the new unit will be 15 seer.
I believe 1 seer is worth about 6% in efficiency.

Mine went out during the summer. Couple of simple fixes. Depended on a guy to help me fix as I couldn’t with one hand. He pulled the football on me like Lucy does with Charlie Brown. I’ve learned my lesson. Will get through the cold like I was at the camp. Never will count on my son again.
Wtf did I just read

Anyone got any company recommendations? I got quoted 13k to replace a 5 ton unit and add another return air vent

Feel for yall. I love our biomass furnace. Got it tied into the ductwork for the central heat and air. That thing paid for itself the first winter we used it. I'll have it hoppin for sure Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

He's legit and nobody will touch his prices.

Just dropped $4500 for a new gas furnace (110 BTU) at Thanksgiving, came back from South Carolina and the house was mighty cold.
Thank goodness we had the fireplace to help dump some heat in the house and a couple milk house type electric heaters.
Put a damper on Christmas $ for sure.
It was 23 years old, so definitely got a good life out of it.

can no longer "manufacturer" old style units. but you can buy one in inventory until that inventory runs out. but what really sucks is they will be changing refrigerant in a couple more years. there will not be a "bridge" type refrigerant to jump from old refrigerants to new one due to UL listing with Flame ratings. once supply of old refrigerant/parts runs out, you have to switch to new units

Same here. A/c guy is friend of the family. I asked him to check my gas heater before we use it. (Built the house in 2006) furnace is rusted and can't be used. He said replace before January because prices going up 20%. Gonna be $4k. I told him he just gave me a kick in the nuts for Christmas. Then the phone rings, and it's the hospital collecting the copay for surgery my wife is having this week. Between hospital and heater, I spent $10k in 10 minutes.
