Well, I'm defending a practice this is being conflated in this.
I don't know if this hunt was illegal - if it was, then all those who participated should be punished.
I also agree that non-subsistence hunts, generally, are silly. Sometimes, nuisance animals need to be harvested, too (nutria, hogs, etc.) And some managed hunting is beneficial to the animals as a group - like whitetail deer.
And, internet shaming is appropriate for this dude, regardless of the legality, as he did it to get a picture for "Facebook" (whatever that is).

The article isn't clear on the laws. But the hunter and guide say there were permits to harvest a lion in that area with a bow. The only thing I can gather from the article is that they killed the wounded animal within the parks boundaries and removed the collar. They notified the authorities of the mistake.

It is pretty bad the way the hunt was handled, but remember, these lions would be in far, far less numbers if not for the Safari hunting business. I'm not saying all the money goes to conservation, that is not true. The dirt bags that hosted this trip aren't conservationist. But the money generated from these hunt leads to the government and people having a stake in making sure the lion population survives. The more lions they can raise, the more money they can make. This kind of story is sad, but the practice is good for the lion population.

i can't speak for predator hunts b/c the food is bad, but i will bet most of the other listed meat did go to sustaining the local population
these big hunts (when done legally, which doesn't appear to be the case here) are very important for local economies, pricing out poachers, feeding local villages, and ecology (typically the animals selected are going to be killed anyway to help with populations)

I'm still on the professional hunter guy the dentist was on the safari with. His facebook for his 'safari hunts' has almost 20 different adult male lions killed with people standing behind them with a gun smiling. I think the dentist was told what he was doing was legal.

I recognize this and think most people can. But we can also note that people who do this are often douchebags, especially this guy.

Obviously the collar thing was a screw up, and they should be punished for that.

yeah it sounds like the dentist had all the legal issues in line and the guide fricked up

The lion was lured out of a protected conservation area. Lion prides are formed by a dominant male lion who breeds other cubs keeping the species alive and strong. When a human interferes with a strong blood line then it weakens the cubs produced. This was stupid stupid. I hope he can face charges.

I don't see the reason behind the smear campaign for the doctor. He paid and did what the landowner told him to do. As far as he's concerned, he did everything correctly, but will probably be jailed over there because of their crooked politics. Meanwhile, the landowner gets off scott free.

Am I understanding that correctly? Even if they had shot and killed him in the park, it wouldn't have been lawful because they weren't permitted to shoot a collared lion?
