Then when we start weeding out people with pre-existing conditions etc, blah blah. Meaning, for people like me, 40ish healthy with no pre-existing problems, the chance of death is even lower.

The lockdown was because they didn’t know what the frick this disease was and they didn’t know how to contain it.

Then everyone freaked out and it snowballed out of control and here we are

Mortality rate isn’t affected by spread. It doesn’t go up or down based on any factors other than demographics and even those can be broken down like the OP has done.

Except we’ve had novel viruses before and this was never the reaction. And there will be more. This was a new precedent set for no fricking reason other than fear and hysteria pushed by media.

It's semantics, I typed that and really hoped someone wouldn't try to call me out with a "gotcha" because of it because of the context.

Instead ill say "more people died beyond the mortality". Better?

It’s actually kind of funny. I feel like we’re going to have the boy who cried wolf scenarios. The overreaction was so bad here, people will soon be put on blast. If some actual pandemic comes through in the not to distance future, politicians won’t do enough in fear of another COVID-19 over reaction.

No because that’s not the case either. Well, unless you force an unnatural amount of spread amongst the old and vulnerable like Cuomo did.

Don’t think you can just add those numbers up to get 0.23%. It would be an average of those three numbers, depending on the number of people in each age group.

I’m not adding them. If you go to the link the CDC gives you an estimate for each group. And I calculated each group as having 1/3 of the cases being asymptomatic.

Why did China lie and hide it from the world?

Did Italy’s media caused their lockdown too? What about South Korea? India?

Did every country’s media get together and make this up?

Wait, so are you arguing that there was never any concern about more people dying from this virus due to hospitals being overrun and not having enough equipment? Even though we just had precedent of that happening of multiple other countries? You are trying to argue that this was never a concern that drove this countries actions?

Because my whole point is based around the response being a concern for this situation. It was literally the entire point of the parroted "flatten the curve".

That’s just not true. Had we just let it rip, hospitals would have been overwhelmed, and patients that would have been saved under normal circumstances would have died for lack of vents. PPE shortages were real too.

That said, we should have taken a much more nuanced approach to this. Lack of reliable data and consistency of measure didn’t help anyone make those determinations early though.

This is where people decide to forget that the concern was about the spread and infection rate overwhelming hospitals and increasing the mortality rate beyond what it normally would be.

While I agree with this, it's easy for us to say that now in hindsight. No one knew it would turn out like this. Imagine if it ended up being the actual next plague and we didn't do anything.

Now let's get shite back to normal ASAP!
