if you want to look at it that way, sure - I have been in the water at Dauphin island and had sharks swim between me and shore, and seen them within a few feet of the shore line. i have caught them fishing. i just prefer to stay out of their habitat. I don't have to go into the water to enjoy the beach - in fact when I go, it is usually to fish - and i can do that from the sand.

You do you, but you realize you have an infinitely higher chance of being injured in a car wreck while driving there than being bitten by a shark while swimming at the beach? It’s an irrational fear.

Gruesome question I know, but was the man's body recovered or was he taken completely away by the shark?

Probably about 6% if anything, based on my experience.

I think k the fear is fueled by how much control one perceives they have.

I dont get sitting there filming this. I'd be running to find help regardless of how useless my efforts would be

She probably thought she'd get a lot of "likes" on her social media and it would go viral, as it has.

Strange world, today.

I watched the video of the Australian swimmer getting eaten. There’s a flock of seagulls flying around trying to get in on the action as well. Absolutely brutal nature.

Can you consider the amount of time in a persons life spent driving and then time spent swimming in the ocean? And then compare risk?

That was the video that threw a wrench in the claim that sharks don't eat people, they simply bite them by mistake or curiosity. That shark was straight feeding on the corpse long after he was dead from the kill bite and floating around.

I've also heard it mentioned that Great Whites are most dangerous during their "awkward teenage years" because they transition from eating fish to eating seals but they haven't really mastered what a seal looks and taste like yet. That's why a lot of Great White attacks are from 10-12 foot sharks instead of the big boys or the little guys.

but there have been numerous attacks where the victim was eaten just like the one yesterday and the one in australia last year. If a huge great white or tiger has made the decision that the victim is prey it's pretty much going to be a meal. If people are around to rescue the victim it doesn't mean the shark wouldn't have consumed them if they were left in the water.

i don't think this is true...sound like shark week BS

Most attacks are mistakes...if not great whites would be eating/attacking people every day

Man, I didn’t even watch the video but have read this entire thread today while hanging out at Tunnels Beach in Kauai on vacation with my family. We have snorkeled at Tunnels, Pali Ke Kua Beach, Annini, and swam in the surf at the west end of Lumahai where the river and ocean meet. We have vacationed here since 2003 and snorkel and swim at least 3/4 of the 16 days we are here. I am kind of apprehensive now to let my family get back in the water over the next week. Some of those reefs have drops of 10-15 feet between them to the sandy bottoms once you are out about 60 yds from shore. I have never seen a shark on any trip while snorkeling but now I am a bit rattled.
I was on the Big Island at the Mauna Lani resort across from the Ritz Carlton staying at a private residence. This is where a lava flow had entered the water over 100 years ago. The reef was awesome. Best I've ever visited for clarity. The Big Island doesn't have rain run off there as it is porous land. Rain goes straight down so no silt. Visibility was awesome.

Anyway, I swam out to where the reef was maybe 7'-10' below me, then it was a shear wall and a sudden drop of 25-20 feet below the reef. Looking around, I was maybe 250' from shore. I was looking at the wall and I see a Ray swimming about 70' away and disappear, then it came out again and I had been mistaken, It wasn't a Ray but it was a white tip shark, about 8'-9' long, just lazily swimming along that wall. I suddenly felt very vulnerable. I could see it so clearly that I could see its gills moving. Suddenly, it noticed me and looked straight up at me. I was now frightened. Probably pissed myself. I kept watching and it kept moving along that wall. After a minute of hyperventilating, I swam back to shore.

I've been diving with sharks many times since then, always in a group, though. But that time in Hawaii truly frightened me. I was completely alone. Nobody knew I was out there. I had ventured into a danger zone and was a sitting duck with not even a dive knife.

Be careful out there

Yeah I'll tell that to the guy who just got devoured by a shark that it's an "irrational fear"

What else could they do, sounds like people were already on it, there's even a boat that pulls up at the end of the video.

So instead of standing there for 30 seconds, you'd run around for 30 seconds on the beach... doing nothing?
