Get a female. Males get territorial and even if neutered, they can/will "mark their territory" with an odor straight from the bowels of Satan's anus. and it's pretty much impossible to get that odor out of carpet.

So, your house smells like cat piss?

Yummy....

My cat goes outside, but he trained on a doggy door. Now I’m in a house without a doggy door and he’ll just mew at the door when he wants to go out. Not sure what training a cat is like without a doggy door

I don’t think I’ve had a single outside cat that didn’t live 10 plus years

Mine only lasted 3 weeks. My cats stay inside now. Just keep the litter fresh, it's not hard to do

Any critter takes work maintaining boxes, shots, illness with vet visits, etc.
If those factors are issues, it would be best not to get anything.

Just scoop the litter once a day and there shouldn't be a problem.

Our kitten was litter trained within a day and a half, so easy peasy.

In general, cats are much cleaner than dogs.

My SO never wanted a cat, and he finally broke down and got me one and now I think he loves him even more than I do . Our kitty is super spirited but also very affectionate, really smart, and hilarious.

Cats are great pets.

Love cats. Very smart and will use a dog/cat door, no problem. Much cleaner than my stupid, nuerotic dog.

The only people who have this problem are the lazy people who don’t clean it. We clean the litter box twice every day. It stays in a room attached to the kitchen that we don’t use for anything besides storage, so it’s out of sight.

Our cat is a cat that appeared one day years ago as a kitten and lived outside for a few years on the patio, so she goes outside for a few hours every day. However, I wouldn’t necessarily suggest adopting a cat with that intention. Not unless you live somewhere that works. My cat doesn’t leave, but most do when you let them out. Your neighbors will likely not be fond of that.

Not to count - a cat not used to the outdoors is more likely to get killed by a coyote, get in fights with other cats, or get run over.

I’ve never had cats before I broke down and got a couple kittens for my daughter but we leave them outside. It’s odd that they even stick around. We’ve had them for years now. They get jumped by the random stray dog, and have been attacked plenty by our own dog in their early years. Now our dog is too old or bored to mess with them very much. Anyway, probably because of their hard knock life they are both tuff as hell. They are nice to humans but can get vicious with other animals if threatened. They are both also assholes that knock shite over constantly in my garage. I kind of like them now though.

I’m giving up defending cats on TD for Lent.

They’ll have to stand on their own 4 paws or the rest of you can defend them while I’m out. Cats are awesome.

I just stuck a piece of packing tape on my cat and you’d think he got burnt with a branding iron. He completely flipped out but now been playing with it for 2 hours. Love that lil rat.

It doesn't smell if you clean it regularly, like at least once every 2-3 days. As long as you keep it somewhere that no one really congregates in, you won't smell a thing.

Some people are lazy as frick, and clean their cats box out like once a week or less, which is absolutely disgusting, and detrimental to the cat. These people shouldn't have indoor cats.

If you change your litter regularly then you don’t get “the smell”.

Also, you should have a box for every cat plus one. I’m an upstairs house we also made sure to have one on each floor even before we got a second cat.

We also have an outdoor cat we’ve kind of adopted that we occasionally feed. And despite both neighbors dealing with mice, we’ve not had that problem as a result.

If your daughter is old enough, this would be a good opportunity to have her clean the litter boxes as a chore and to develop responsibility for her new cat.

They clean themselves better than a lot of people on this website

Just clean the box daily and it's no issue. Cats themselves do not smell bad at all, nowhere close to how dogs smell.

I hate both of my cats with a passion but nothing to do with litter box or smell. They are weird clean freak animals and we have an automatic litter box.

Females will straight up shite and piss on your stuff out of revenge.

Males in a non-stressful environment will not mark territory when neutered, even more true when he's the only cat. Boy cats are great, really and (imo) typically make better companions. When you do it right, the boys will incorporate you into their pack and they'll just hang out with you all the time

Yep. We only have the one cat but we have a box in the front of the house and also one in the Master bathroom. He likes to sleep with us so that way he doesn't have to go far to pee in the middle of the night.

Get a MALE cat. After getting fixed a male makes a better pet than a female. The males calm down and will become lovable. Females will always be mean and feisty
