That's why you don't run out of gas...

Why not go back and put it behind the license plate?
Posted on 12/4/18 at 9:51 am to Geauxnoose
Made illegal because safety.

My wife has a GMC Terrain and the fuel door is on the passenger side, for the first two months when I was driving I would inevitably pull to the wrong side out of habit. I’m sure I looked like a moron.

I agree. You shouldnt drive on the side of the road.

really? Do you not understand how flow works? Were your parents salmon?
If filler location were standardized (left or right) everyone at the pump would be facing the same way.
Years ago, I had someone get upset because I didn’t pull up to the farthest pump. He was trying to back in behind me because his filler was opposite of mine. He put it back in drive and pulled around the lot to the pump in front of me. My filler on my CJ was right rear.
Is it that big of a deal? No, but standardization is always nice and keeps things moving.
Do you live in BFE or something? Are your gas stations all on one-way dirt roads?

If you live in BFE, then it's a non-issue because the pumps are never crowded. It's the stations in urban or metropolitan areas or along major travel routes where it becomes a "problem". Vehicles pulling in from different directions disrupts flow.
After reading some of the responses, I should have worded the OP differently. Should probably read something like: "Why isn't the location of fillers on American cars standardized?"
Decades ago, I filled dump trucks every morning at work. the fleet was a hodgepodge of makes and models. We only had one pump (offroad diesel) so I had the trucks lined up in two directions. It's just not efficient.

Again, this makes no sense. You don’t think forcing people coming in from different directions to sort themselves out in one direction just to fuel up, and then resort themselves to go on in different directions would be a cluster frick?

My Subaru was designed in Japan by Fuji Heavy Industries and then built on an assembly line in Indiana and it has a right side fuel door.

Purely gauging by the pic you posted, I'd hate to squat on my knees to pump gas.

That's why Volvo does it.
Yes, design for the situation that happens once a decade (running out of gas) instead of once a week (getting gas).

The only time I get mad at this is at Sams club. They have one way lanes into the pumps and half of them are for right side fuel doors. There’s a huge line at the left side and maybe two cars in the right side.

As a child, I swear I remember pulling down the license plate and filling up from there. Or was that a messed up dream I had?
I remember. That's back when you could take a nap on the shelf behind the back seat.

It is very convenient at Costco because fewer people use that side of the pump.

Huh? all of my toyotas/Lexus's have fuel door on the right side.

Article on this issue. Complete with the video of the woman who keeps driving around the pumps.
So basically, right side for safety, left side for convenience. Sometimes due to technical design issues.
Center rear is now illegal.

I don’t fill up at Costco anymore because they made me wait in line instead of coming from the other direction
