I would already 100% assume a Carnival ship reeks of shitty, pungent stank arse weed. In the very off chance I took a Carnival cruise, smelling it all over the entire ship would certainly not be a shock.

It is actually the opposite. You’re more likely to get it confiscated if you check it than if you do carryon. Heard this directly from a TSA agent as they won’t take it from your carry on unless it is significant volume. They don’t care and won’t care. The agents will take it from your checked baggage if they find it.
