Depends.. do you have kids, plan on having kids.. if no, sure sell.. if yes, i would hang on and pass down.
Yes, 2 girls, but as you can imagine, they don't care about my collection of football, basketball and baseball cards.

Personally not something i would sell unless needed the money
I'm not required to sell it - simply was trying to figure out since MJ is a hot topic right now, the interest is there, but as another poster(s) had stated, getting it graded from Beckett's or PSA appears to mean more, but I will have to wait 5 or 6 months to get the card back and certainly the interest will have subsided by then.

If you had a PSA 10 you would have some money. The 8 and 9 to 10 ratio is fricking crazy for that card.

8 and 9 has 10k (7.5k and 2.7k) pop while 10 only has 317. Obviously there are probably a ton of regrades in those 8s and 9s, but that sort of ratio doesn't bode well for those grades long term, but makes PSA 10 an insane
Since the card I have is graded by SG and is rated as an 86, how does this relate to the Beckett or PSA grading, assuming all things are equal with the card?

No telling. It actually looks like SGC is a little more popular in the sports card world (so reputable), but no where close to PSA and BGS
If you were to cross grade, there's no telling without seeing the actual card. I wouldn't expect anything more than an 8 from PSA or Beckett

Yep. But be prepared to have to wait 3-4 months if you ship your card to PSA or 5-6 months if you choose BGS
Unless you pay the extra money for a single card. Had a buddy send a Burrow Auto Ice card to PSA and got it back in 2 weeks. 10/10 were both grades.

You got (or plans to have) kids? Give it to your kid as an inheritance. It will be worth a mint after MJ dies and the older the card gets.

Yea it's $50 for 2 day grading with BGS. Considering doing it when I get my 1/1 Ceedee Lamb auto in from Panini.
I just usually do $15/card bulk orders (usually 50 card minimum) with a month turnaround

If it's not graded by Beckett or PSA, it's grade isn't worth anything
I would say PSA is the most reputable grading company for cards. If anyone has a PSA 10 graded MJ rookie, right now you are sitting pretty well. I though about buying a PSA 7 a bunch of years ago, wish I had now, because even a graded 7 is in the thousands!

Sell card.
Take monies and buy ATT stock on the next dip.
Let that pot grow over 20 years. i bet you won't have any disappointment.

How does it work if I send my card to get graded to PSA (for example) since I already have it graded with SG and it's enclosed in a plastic case with the grading number, bar code, etc.? Will PSA remove SG's grading number, bar code, etc. and then place it in another case with their information?

There is a surge in the whole market right now. The 1989 UD KGJ card has doubled in price. McGuire Team USA has Gone up again. I was just reading that the other night. In addition to those 2 cards I've seen mention that "junk wax" may be making a comeback because of us nostalgic old farts.
I've taken enough hits over the years that I've learned you sell whenever you have an upswing on anything 80s. I've made the mistake of adding Henderson and Conseco to my collection when they were topped out in the early 90s. I have a box of cased $20 cards now and boxes of cards for which I paid more for the storage box than the cards are now worth.

They used to make you remove the card prior to shipping. I doubt there’s much reward trying to switchover an SGC 86 to PSA. There’s a lot of gamesmanship around mid grades and you need to know the lineage of serial numbers to succeed. For a card that popular, it’s likely someone already cracked your card from a psa 7 and sent it to sgc to get a bump to an sgc 86.
Both companies systems have also evolved through the years, so the font and serial numbers can also be used to distinguish past tendencies of each company at the time of grading and determine how the grade would differ now. PSA received a lot of scrutiny when people started tracking eBay sales of large dealers who were consistently buying PSA cards and then routinely having them upgraded by PSA and relisting them. Consequently PSA started offering a service where you pay a fee and they’d reholder your card with the newest font and a new serial number. After eBay changed the ability to view buy/sell histories it became nearly impossible to trace.
PSA might be the most prominent, but a quick YouTube search reveals how shady the system is. There’s endless examples of not only just improved grades, but also alterations to the regraded cards over time that are consistently missed.

I have a Fleer 1986-87 # 57 Michael Jordan Rookie Card
I haven’t been in the card game since I was a kid, and even then it was mostly baseball cards, so I may be confused. But MJ was a rookie in 1984. So how does it work that an 86/87 card is his rookie card? That doesn’t make sense.

Star had the nba license from 82-85, and they released the cards in team bags via mail order. A rookie card is generally the first mainstream card, where limited releases are considered and XRC. For Jordan in particular, most people dismissed his Star cards because when companies assets were liquidated the original printing plates and card stock found their way into the wild, and it’s widely believed another round of Jordans were reprinted in the 90s that are indistinguishable.
