PARIS, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Carbon capture is not a solution for the energy transition and political leaders need to provide real, non-greenwashed, commitments to encourage investment, Andrew Forrest, executive chairman of Fortescue Metals, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary meeting of the International Energy Agency, Australian billionaire Forrest said the investment community needs a level-playing field and honest answers from political leaders on phasing out fossil fuels in order to invest.

"There's a simple question from business leaders...when do we stop burning fossil fuels?
" Forrest said at the Paris conference.

"If you want to drive capital...we must have clear and obvious disincentives for what is doing harm and clear incentives for what is doing good."

Countries including the U.S. have rolled out public subsidies for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects as part of their incentives to push the green energy transition.

CCS technologies capture carbon dioxide emissions, often from a source like a factory smoke stack, to prevent them from being released into the atmosphere. The captured CO2 can then be stored permanently underground, or repurposed in industrial processes that use CO2.

Oil demand growth is not set to peak until the end of this decade at the earliest and Forrest said carbon capture was not a viable solution.

"We're going to keep burning fossil fuels and somehow magically get rid of the carbon down into the ground where there is no proof that it will stay there, but heaps of proof that it fails," Forrest told the conference.

"I say for policy makers everywhere do not be the next idiot waiting for the old lie to be trotted out and say I believe in carbon sequestration. It has only failed for 75 years...It's a complete falsehood."

Australia's Fortescue is a major iron ore producer, which is used in steel-making and it announced a new project last year to produce green steel on a commercial scale. Iron and steel-making account for a major share of global heavy industry emissions, and its trade has become source of contention between the United States and the EU, which have so far failed to negotiate a "green steel" trade deal.

So now, after this guy has made billions in a "dirty industry" and has his generations of decedents set for life, the rest of the peasants and developing world must be discouraged to do without the advances that are made possible by fossil fuels.

So, this guy wants governments to force people to invest in his interests?

This is the kind of bullshite that makes me believe that all of these ideas are just that....bullshite!

This guy owns a mining company and has many other mining related investments. Pretty much explains his position entirely.

He seems to put a lot of money into left wing philanthropy and his daughter has been to the Vatican about sex trafficking issues.

Just typical modern left wing billionaire family activities.

The energy companies are pushing fake carbon capture, so they can get billions in tax credits and then use carbon capture credits to continue drilling at will.

It's a complete scam and has been since day one, just as the entire climate industry is.

Most agree with this

And most agree its stupid to subsidize

But now that the subsidies have passed and exist, why the hell would anyone be against those subsidies creating much needed well paying jobs and bolstering the local economy?

Honest question, how is CCS not as advertised?

Matter and energy are not created nor destroyed but merely shift phases.

Isn’t that what CCS is doing?

This captures it succinctly. Yet there are some downvoting you. LOL.

I'm curious about what's wrong with carbon capture. Somebody posted a basic law of thermodynamics. Maybe the answer is "expending energy to move around carbon created by generating energy is contradictory," but you could say the same thing about electrostatic bag houses, air pumps on car engines, etc.

In any case, it seems to me that whenever you propose any answer other than "we'll all reduce our standard of living (or just die off) and never, ever burn anything" you get stonewalled by these people. That makes me think they're not concerned about the environment. They just don't like humans (probably starting with themselves).

And Taylor swift uses carbon credits to justify her flying all the time on private jets. It’s all bogus. Rich will do what they want while we all get bullied.

CCUS requires energy. Lots of it. But if you power it with low carbon energy (ie nuclear) then there is opportunity to significantly reduces co2 emissions.

Aside from being stored underground, CO2 can be captured, reacted with hydrogen made by splitting water with electricity (from nuclear), then turned back into building block chemicals.

It’s not fake, it’s a proven but still growing technology and process that’s been going on for decades. It is expanding due to carbon credits. Does it completely offset carbon emissions? No but it reduces them just like replacing coal with natural gas has. The idiots who are saying it’s fake and doesn’t work just hate oil and gas companies and are pushing an agenda.

How the hell can you predict that oil demand will peak at the end of the decade when 1/3 of the population of the world is still burning wood and shite for fuel.
