A car salesman would rather sell you a used car.....greater margin.

You didn’t order the metallic pea?

This is not the car I ordered. I distinctly ordered the Antarctic Blue Super Sports Wagon with the C.B. and optional rally fun pack.

Problem is you don’t need salesman for cars in this day and age
The only ones that make anything are the ones that get credit for the fleet sales

They stand behind every car or truck they sell, because if the brakes fail, they would get ran over.

Nothing about car salesmen annoys me other than the dishonesty that only works on the bottom 20% of customers. Example:

"The manufacturers won't let us charge more for in demand vehicles so the only way we can benefit from the demand and hassle of all of it is with dealer add ons. I know you've been able to negotiate these in the past but at this point if you don't take them someone else will. Not trying to squeeze you that's just the reality"

- I can live with this actually.

like the f&i guy who tried to get me to buy gap insurance on a vehicle with an LTV of about 75%

That’s not why people hate them

They’re almost all pointless in this day and age

Last two cars I bought, the salesmen knew absolutely nothing about the cars. Couldn't answer a single simple question. I watched a youtube video before we went and knew more about the cars.

Told one of them they should maybe get on youtube and learn about their products.

I agree and disagree.

In the end, they chose the job. The job gives them no option if they want to feast vs famine... they have to blur the lines and pull as many coins from you as possible.

Car prices should JUST be one set price, period. (I'm not advocating government involvement, don't misunderstand me). It would be ok if they started high, and then car companies decide when the dealerships can lower them if they haven't sold well enough. So this way, the only choice a consumer has is if they want to pay that fresh off the assembly line new hotness luxury vs waiting a year before the new models come in. That would be on the buyer.

In the end, the customer is hosed even if nominally, for money they didn't HAVE to spend by people who are selling that know they could sweeten it further.

It's a vicious cycle. But they do deserve the ire.

Can you explain how a plant worker taking some OT is the same as a car salesman overselling to someone who they know can't afford a payment on the car they're selling them long term?

buying a car shouldn't feel as much like a scam as it does

I am no car salesman, but I tend to agree with you. It’s just sales. Nobody is taking you hostage, and they aren’t using Jedi mind tricks. You don’t have to make a purchase. You can walk at any time. The biggest issue I see is people not knowing how to negotiate.

The people who should be taking the heat are the F&I guys.
