I am not a seasoned car buyer - the last new car I purchased was in 2011. I am now in the market for a new vehicle, and have found myself in what seems like a difficult situation.

Dealer A has the vehicle I want. We negotiate a price (via internet) and come to an agreement. I call yesterday to place a deposit and get everything in order to pick up this Friday, and they tell me that "oops, we sold it with 10 others to a fleet." So I said "alright, I know there are 20 just like this in the area, take a look and see if you can get one."

Dealer B has the vehicle I want. They are firm on their price, which is $1,200 above what I negotiated at Dealer A. So I put a deposit down at Dealer B since it was a bird in the hand, but still interested in the price from Dealer A.

Dealer A has now come back and said "we found it, here's the sticker, we'll honor our original price, and it'll be here for Friday."

Should I just back out of the deal with Dealer B?

Both are within 100 miles of where I live, so it's not a huge difference in terms of time to get there.

Can you get your deposit back?

ETA: better be sure A isnt getting the car from B.

Are they identical?

Show them what Dealer A's price is in writing and give them a chance to match, if not, go to Dealer A.

Yes, and legally they need to give you the deposit back.

Figure out if you can get your deposit back first. If you can, call Dealer B and ask them to match Dealer A or you are going to dealer A.

If the deposit is non-refundable you may be stuck with Dealer B.

Very Important question here, depending on the deposit, doesn't it make sense to go to A if you can't get it back?

I know on ordered cars you can't, for obvious reasons.

I've never done what OP is doing, so IDK how the deposit stuff works...

Is the deposit at Dealer B refundable? If not, how much did you put down?

Do you just want to pay $1200 more?

I'd first find out if my deposit at Dealer B is refundable. If so, I'd give Dealer B a chance to match the price of Dealer A. If they refuse to, get your deposit back and go with Dealer A.

I faced this exact scenario play out a little over a year ago. Ended up with deposits on matching vehicles at two dealers. They will give the deposit back. Even if they don't "have" to, they won't want the negative publicity over it.

ETA: But yes, on an ordered vehicle it might be different depending on brand.

State laws may play a role here -- or not -- but in Georgia, one dealer told me their deposit was nonrefundable while another dealer said their's was refundable. I made a deal with the second dealer, but they sold the car out from under me. The salesman was a little bitch about giving me my deposit back, but he gave it back.

Yes. You are not tied to that vehicle just because of a deposit. Tell them you'd go with them if they match the price or thanks but no thanks if they won't match the price.

Tell them dealer A is selling the car for the lesser price.

Find out just how "firm" they really are.

Too many unknowns for sound advice

What vehicle ?

What is the Out the door price ?

Is financing involved ?

Are rates the same ?

What was the deposit ?

I once purchased a vehicle in AZ for the MSRP minus the huge deposit some dude put down on it. I called looking for a certain car with certain packages. They had the only one in the state. They told me it was ordered for a guy and he put down a big deposit but then went missing. They said he had 90 days to execute the sale or I could buy the car. On day 91, I was standing at the dealership with a bank check.

I started dealing with 4 dealerships when I started the buying process via internet. Two dealerships didn’t want to budge much on price. Found the exact car I wanted in Dallas. I live in central Louisiana. Told Shreveport dealership what car I wanted. They said they had the car with red seats for $300 more than the Dallas dealership with the black seats I wanted. Shreveport said they would try and locate the car I wanted. I never told them I was dealing with Dallas. The next day Shreveport said they located a car in Dallas. Said they would go get it. So I got the car that I had already found online and Shreveport picked it up for me. It came down to $300 difference.

Better question - How long will it take to get your deposit back? A month?

A looked at B...but figured out it had been sold (to me, via putting a deposit down).

Identical except for two add-on features totaling $150. These are negligible and won't impact my decision.

The deposit is refundable.

My lean was to go with A - all things equal, give me the lower price for the same thing.

Ask dealer A for an itemized breakdown and out the door price. It's possible they have extra fees that will explain how their price is so much better. If not, you can get your deposit back from B and go with A. I'd also make sure you're talking about the exact same car. If it's a Toyota for example, two cars of the same trim level can have different equipment. That could also explain the price difference.

I have all of that.

Dealer A had the vehicle on the lot for 100+ days and was ready to part with it (thus the fleet sale done out from under me).

Dealer B just received theirs yesterday.

Stickers are 99.9% match. Only difference is the two minor add ons that equate to $155.
