Car Key Question

I lost my car key and the dealership is charging an arm and a leg for a new one.
Amazon has keys for $20 that match the name and model, but will those actually work in the ignition?
I don’t mind not having the remote capacity, I just need the physical key.
I’m very ignorant with cars, please be gentle

the key is cheap, pairing it with the car is the 500 dollar question. Dealer scam to work around

Any local locksmith can get you a new key (fully functional w/remote capability) for about half the price of the dealer. It won't be OEM but it will be equal quality.

Pop A Lock quoted me the same basic cost that Toyota did, anyone you recommend?

Most likely a transponder key. Cheapest way around it is to get copies of key made at a hardware store and then chop off the top part of the existing key that has the transponder chip and duct tape it right next to the ignition. Otherwise, it will be expensive.

There should be other options besides the dealership to program a new key. Try calling some local locksmith companies.
Still pricey, but less than the dealership.

American Key & Lock on Sherwood sells them much cheaper than dealership.

Check with local locksmiths, they can generally cut keys and program them to most vehicles, most these days are done with a tablet and software via the ODBII port. Will probably be half of what the dealer wants to charge for a mobile locksmith, less if they have a physical presence and you bring to them.

No, you can't just buy a key from amazon and it starts your car.
You have to have it setup by someone to work.

I'm in BR and used Brunson and Alford. Also I have ordered one off Amazon but still had to bring it to the locksmith. Both times it was still about half the price of the dealer ($150 vs over $300) but that was 4-5 years ago so prices may have gone up

If in Baton Rouge get Tiger Locksmith to do it. They have done it for me in the past when I bought a used Toyota that only had one key. The dealership actually recommended them.
They will come to you and do it in your driveway in 10 minutes.

Do you have any key left or did you lose the only one?

A newer Toyota has to have the key programmed to the car on-site by either a dealer or a locksmith that has the same computer. You'll also need the key to be physically cut to your locks.
Needless to say, not something you can just buy off eBay. It's going to cost you a few bucks regardless.

A locksmith will be cheaper, it happened to me a few years ago

My local Ace Hardware made me a duplicate several years ago for iirc ~$160-$180. Can’t remember exactly how much, but under $200. The only downside to them was they didn’t have a lot of blanks in stock, so I had to wait 2 days.
