How much of a discount could one expect for the following car on dealer lot

2015 Dodge Challenger
MSRP $36,300
Current price $27,900
500 miles

Thanks in advance for your input...

Aren't the 2016s out?

Seems too high for a used car, or is it a demo?

I'd aim for at least $11k off msrp. That car is over a year old already.

285 "actual" miles, assuming demo...

Assuming it's being sold about a new unit (they still have the MSO), it's an extremely old age unit. They HAVE to get rid of it very, very soon. Once the 2017s roll in, it's a 2 year old car and the dealership has to basically "buy" it (assuming it's floor planned and owned by a bank).

So I would start at around 30-35% off. I have never worked at a dealership but I own a business that does vendor work at over a dozen dealerships and have a good idea of what they can and can't do.

It's not a true "demo". Cars that are taken off the lot for demo purposes will be sold with 3,000-7,000 miles.

With 285 miles, it was either bought or traded from another dealership or used as a "chase" vehicle.

There's only one way to get the best price on a car: do your research and find every similar car within whatever distance you're willing to drive to get it. Then work those dealers against each other for the best price.

Has the car been previously titled or not?

If so, it is a used car.

And, why is it for sale after only 500 miles?

I'd be real cautious here...

Depends on their inventory, number of vehicles sold vs. sales goal for month / quarter and whether or not vehicle listed above has been "titled."

But mainly it depends on how well you can or cannot negotiate.

It could have come from another dealership as a trade and picked up miles that way. A chase vehicle is one that is used by the employees to go run errands like pick up a vehicle from the tint shop, or a quick loaner to a customer that has a vehicle that's getting work done, etc. A true demo is taken off the lot and has hard dealer tags and has to be driven at least 3,000 miles and then gets around a $2,000 discount.

If it still has an MSO (never been titled), then the warranty starts the day that someone purchases the vehicle.

In the eyes of the FTC, it is a used car, titled or not.

If it is on MSO, the warranty would start when he buys it. It can legally be sold as "new".

He should also receive a Used Car Buyers Guide with the purchase of the vehicle.
