I've got a cousin who lives in metro Atlanta and she was telling me a bunch of people had their cars broken into at a senior citizen home on Valentine's day. Search car break-ins on Google and you'll see multiple reports of similar accidents around the country. Seems like this is becoming a growing problem. Is this rise in "petty" crime a coincidence or is the push to not prosecute non-violent crimes the culprit?

I'd imagine the opioid epidemic is a big contributing factor.

If someone would shoot a person doing this, it would all come to an abrupt end.

unless the car is older than 06, it can't be cranked without the key. so, most of the break-ins occur to vehicles that are unlocked or have merchandise visible through the windows. ford trucks are targeted the most because of that keypad that customers use to lock and unlock their doors. the criminals know that the dumb customer usually keeps the keys in the truck instead of taking it out. the keypad was designed IN CASE you locked your keys in the truck. not to unlock and lock all the time.

I'm 100% certain they are happening across the country and not just in big cities...

It’s a huge problem in Houston. The problem is that if they’re caught (rare), the prosecutors often give them no bail and they back out on the street with a promise to show back up for court. Which they don’t... so the problem continues and then more people join in because they know they will be let off easily.

False, and the shooter would be charged.

Probably not.

There would be massive protests as to why the person doing the shooting wasn't thrown in jail for life. Then, the local govt would outlaw intervening during a crime this exacerbating the problem.

metro Atlanta

Had my car broken into roughly a month ago near Piedmont Park.

I don't park anywhere anymore in the city. I just bite the bullet and Uber.

The youts have ruined it for everyone.

Houston has a shite load of auto thefts too. It doesn't seem they recover a lot of them either. Most are probably cruising around in Mexico right now.

No it wouldn't.

The little hood rats grow up around violence and know people who get shot, many times it's friends and family.
They aren't scared of getting shot.

LOL

Let me know when your car gets broken into in Alpharetta, GA, or Cary, NC.

No it wouldn't...the thugs that do this expect to be dead or in prison by the time they turn 25.

Sounds like some professionals rather than your average hood rats. They hit several fire stations too last weekend.

Restorative justice. They’re putting a new low income, gov subsidized complex in the middle of Shady Acres/ Heights to lower the criminal commute to our neighborhood.
