Cape Town -- a city once at the forefront of Africa's green movement -- implemented new emergency water restrictions Thursday as the sprawling metropolis prepares for the day its taps run dry.

Residents are now being asked to curb the amount of municipal water they use each day to just 50 liters (a little over 13 gallons). Only a month ago, level six restrictions had placed residents on a daily allowance of 87 liters (about 23 gallons), illustrating the severity of the looming crisis.

Officials estimate that if water levels continue to fall as expected, South Africa's second most populous city will run out of water by April 16, which is known as "Day Zero."

Aren't they by the ocean? Pauly Shore learned how to filter water for drinking in like 20 minutes.

Guess I'll never get the chance to go there to swim with great whites. Oh well, I'll just go to one of the other places that has water.

I don't agree with colonialism, but man Ian Smith was spot on in his predictions of what would happen in Rhodesia and South Africa once white minority-rule was abolished.

I mean, I think this has more to do with a 3 year long drought and population growth. Cape Town was like half the size it is now during Ian Smith's time.

I don’t know about “America” going dry, but certain places are going to have to make tough decisions and find some alternate sources within our lifetime. California is damaging their aquifer by pumping out too much. Places in south Florida have damaged the aquifer down there with salt water intrusion. Most of the southeast will be fine though.

They had to throw “climate change” in there. News flash frickers. Y’all live in a desert in Africa. Droughts happen. Maybe look into packing millions of people into an urban environment with shitty infrastructure as the cause?

Cape Town is in a Mediterranean Climate zone, not the desert.

This comment is asinine in this thread, unless you're implying white leaders made it rain more often.
