So you’re defending the tearing down of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Grant statues?

I doubt more than 0.5% have ever read a single word of Marx let alone had a formal study of the philosophy. But it's the boogie man. If you cast your enemies as monsters then you don't have to reason for your own position anymore.
Do you believe in the the profit incentive? How about ownership of private property?

That’s not even how it works for non athletic scholarships. Asians get screwed because they do well and blacks get rewarded for doing poor on those tests.

The question isn't "does Marxism work" but rather "why do people on the right label social movements that have nothing to do with Marxist ideas as Marxism?"

Because Critical Theorism/Intersectionalism doesn't quite have a good ring to it, not to mention that they are in many senses the sociological descendants of economic Marxism. Many in the movement will gladly identify as Marxists, as well.

That is almost word-for-word what I was going to say.. Except I'm drunk and didn't know those things.

However, why can't football players be actual students?
I mean if I went to UNO and didn’t have football outside of intramural I’d probably agree (totally joking and friendly jab at UNO)
But you are getting into amateurism of college sports which is a loaded, multi billion dollar industry that has bad apples, including the NCAA, conferences, pro managers throwing cash at kids that def does not equate to their value. Especially considering the tv money.
Also CFL? Come on man...

What a world it would be if student-athletes were simply students who managed to make a team, rather than a multi billion dollar industry.
I have pondered the same thing
With pro sports becoming more politicized, it becomes more of a consideration.
Some folks are even advocating for certain factions to boycott power 5 conference and go to traditionally “ “ schools.
To be honest Hemp, I think some things are going to go down that make all facets of life different (hopefully for the better). Education/university will become increasingly decentralized /personalized
Imagine being able to spend your weekend /time on another continent/planet. Sports may be filled by other distractions that are much more meaningful.

quote:I would say that the Marxist label is an effort to avoid debating issues on their own merits by combining many criticisms of society under one umbrella term with a scary, poorly understood label. From there, it's an easy step toward arguing that something like race-mixing will logically lead to all of us living in a Stalinist gulag, as segregation supporters did in the Fifties.

While some people in these various movements are Marxist, most, especially in the USA, are not. It's possible to want to remove statues that glorify the CSA while being a full-on capitalist. You can be an activist for gay rights, or abortion, or ending police brutality, without even knowing who Karl Marx was and while being as profit-driven as anyone else.

I don't disagree, but at least to my eyes, the most vocal and visible elements of these movements almost certainly fall under the former description.

You'd be surprised by how many left leaning Americans haven't read it. You usually get responses like, "soCiAlIsM iS wHeN tHe gOvErNMeNt gIves u sTuFf."

Because the founder of the movement claims it is, maybe?

Sounds great except this alone would probably be just about more than the entire federal budget. Rainbows and unicorns
