Pfffft.

Gotta go full tuxedo if you’re even considering anything remotely Canadian:

Canadian Tuxedo in the wild I found in the parking lot at Snowbird, UT:

Down jackets have been around in the outdoor community for at least 60 years, my oldest ones are over 30 years old. They go in and out of fashion kinda like shearling jackets. I remember them being in for a while in the late 70s then again in the 90s. They made another comeback a few years ago. IMO even the ultralight down jackets are too warm for SELA but people there aren't used to cold weather.

If you want a good one RAB, Feathered Friends, Mountain Research, Patagonia and Arcteryx all make excellent down clothes. Feathered Friends really can't be beaten in the down area. If you want one to wear in the South in winter the Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer is hard to beat. It is the only one of my down jackets I ever wear "around town" but I wear it to be warm in sub 30 degree days not as a fashion statement.

Saw some at Neiman’s for like $850. Bought something similar at REI for about $75, though it’s very plain, not nearly as nice looking, surely not as warm, and is already shedding feathers. If I lived in a colder climate, I’d probably drop some dough on one, but living in the South I probably wear a jacket 10 days a year.

I have one that is about 7 years old. Bought when I lived in Colorado. Keeps me warm with just a t-shirt underneath in single digit weather.

I am by no means poor, but $1,875 for a jacket? Are these people insane?

I have a down vest that I wear all the time during the winter here. Is it a recent deal? I bought mine in 1979 still fits great and still works the way it did when new. IMO it was a good investment. Of course it was only about $60 back in 1979.

First, it is hard for people that have spent most of their life in the South to comprehend what it is like to live in a place that might go weeks without seeing a day without reaching 15 degrees for a high. A nice jacket that is actually warm in those temps is a godsend. I have been in Chicago during the winter when I was cold wearing a winter weight suit, Chelsea boots with thick socks a heavy Chesterfield, and a scarf.

That said Canada Goose makes nice jackets that last (very chic in Korea and Japan BTW) but they are overpriced and a bit of a Veblen good. One thing to note is they do NOT use goose down but heavier duck down. They are similar to Barbour, Filson, or Private White in the waxed jacket segment: very good quality but at the high end of the market price wise. I listed some high-quality goose down jackets earlier that are cheaper than Canada Goose and will last just as long or longer.

I tend to be a little extravagant with clothing but it is somewhat expected in my job. The good thing about a lot (but not all) high dollar clothing is that it lasts and even if it isn't the current style it tends to remain classic for a long time. I have a Burberry Trench and a Paul Stuart Chesterfield both of which are over 20 years old and while I spent a small fortune on them they still look and function like new. Canada Goose can be the same but people that live in areas where Christmas is often shorts and T-shirt weather won't see much utility from a $500+ winter jacket. Plus some people don't give 2 fricks about what their clothes look like particularly how expensive they look and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

My guy.

This is Baton Rouge.

Do you really need a coat that someone can use in Canada?

Have you ever lived in the city where they have single digit temps for 2 months out of the year?
