I can typically do it in around 5 minutes. I learned years ago and the sequence has just stuck with me.

Never solved one. Was given one as a kid, gave up after five minutes and threw it in the trash

Yes.

Fun fact: No matter how "mixed up" a Rubik's cube is, it's never more than 27 moves from being solved.

I could solve 2 sides. Best I ever got.

My 13 y.o. son moved from 3x3 to 4x4. He has both of those down and solved his first 5x5 a few days ago. He says they make a 6x6.

This is the same son who requested Rubik's Cube grease for his birthday. He tells me that's it "just an algorithm" for solving any of them. Which may or may not be correct--I'd be the last person to know.
