I know someone who bought their daughter a jeep, standard transmission bc he didn't want her texting and driving. She learned.

Came here to say this. Great idea for a kids first vehicle.

he was supposed to teach me

I taught my wife and she had a rough time at the beginning. Going from 2 pedals to 4 plus that long stretch from 2nd gear to third almost broke her interest. But, she kept practicing and after crossing the MS River Bridge at its worst time, she is pretty confident now. Just takes practice.

Yes - we lost our standard transmission pick up truck in a hurricane - and have only bought automatics since

I’ve been looking for one to buy the kids but they are pretty rare and my husband doesn’t have too much time to work on vehicles (if it’s older) anymore

I couldn’t drive a manual transmission until I was 25 when I decided to buy a car with a stage 3 racing clutch even though I couldn’t drive it because I’m a complete idiot. I eventually got it though and now it’s second nature to me. I wish I still had a car with a manual transmission, it made me get how people can really love driving.

I learned to drive a truck with manual transmission and no power steering or power brakes.

Had to learn a new driving style when I finally go in a car with the modern features. First, use just one foot instead of two. Also, don’t jam on the brake like in the truck or everyone hits the windshield.

20 years ago I would have said get your kid a manual transmission because it will be a useful skill. But there won’t be more than a handful of models that even offer a manual transmission 10 years from now so it really doesn’t matter. Or at least that old reasoning doesn’t hold water/apply to new drivers today.

ETA: my first car was a Ford ranger and it had a manual transmission so you can put me down as a yes

I've never owned a vehicle with an automatic transmission.

ETA:

First car- 1990 Nissan 240SX. Fun car, could put it sideways effortlessly and flick back straight just as easy.

1998 Acura Integra GSR- Built engine, turbocharged, 10,000 rpm redline. Screamer in a straight line.

2003 Chevy S-10- Utilitarian and slow, wish they still made compact pick-ups.

2007 MINI Cooper S, 2011 JCW- Just a different road feel than anything else I've driven. Can pretty much put it into corners at whatever speed I choose.

I've got a kid that will be driving in 2 years. Stick shift will be my next purchase. All family members will be pissed about it, but it's going to be fun as hell.

Start her on a manual.

When I take my car I can't believe how many "car people" have to get someone else to drive it in the bay. Free synthetic oil changes at 10qts a pop is the only reason they see my car.

Operating a car with 2 petals is operating. Operating a car with 3 is driving.

Tell them that instead of texting, he will be deciding which gear to shift to.

I can drive the hell out of a standard! My first vehicle was a 5 speed, and I would honestly drive one even now if they sold full sized SUVs with a 5 speed shifter. I’ve had 2....,wish the Jeep I once owned was a 5 speed. Thankful my father taught me to drive one. I will hopefully own another one at some point in my life when I have some disposable income for a fun 3rd vehicle. I love the full engagement of driving one, and they have to be easier to work on.

I learned how to drive with a standard. My first four vehicles had standard transmissions.

She will learn, just like everyone else used to.

I own a standard and drive it daily. It would suck not to know how to drive one here in Germany as the majority of cars are standard.

You are definitely dating yourself by calling it a standard transmission.

And, yes.
