Should be prosecuted to the extent that DUI is at a minimum. It actually ought to be a law in this country that ANY phone traveling at more than 8 or 10 miles per hour shut down completely. The entertainment and information screens in newer vehicles also ought to be outlawed. An individual may be able to multi-task to that extent while operating a 3000 pound machine which kills 36,000 people a year in the US but it is a rare individual who can and they have no defense against those who can't.

You are correct. I was wrong.
Each car absorbs the impact of a 50 mph collision.
Still, I blow the frick outta my horn going down Highland Road.
Just yesterday I laid on the horn at 2 cars. Hope I scared the frick out of them. frick em.

We live in an age where machines are far more capable of driving safely than we are....driving a car ought to require a helluva insurance policy and a stringent test and the license ought to be such that it would be impossible for all but the most devout advocates to afford. I can't wait until self driving vehicles outnumber those being driven by people.

I think it eventually turns into a situation where owning a vehicle won't even be necessary....you will just buy a subscription to Waymo and it will show up when you order it and when you're done it will go on with its life and you will go one with yours. I hope I live long enough to see fully autonomous cars and them being more common than not and readily available....I would buy one today if it existed and was allowed. And of course if it was in line cost wise....

In the rest of the world this is a legal requirement and it is enforced by both human police and cameras....and for some strange reason NO ONE DRIVES constantly in anything other than the "slow" lane and only use other lanes to pass slower vehicles. Its astonishing. Its a mystery why we can't do it in the United States, every other developed nation on earth that I have driven in is capable of doing it....

What are you talking about. I cant drive from Shreveport to Monroe without seeing at least 3-4 tax collectors set up to catch "speeders"

Washington State has a serious zipper merge public information program and it works in every corner of the state. It is only doomed to fail in states where no one cares to make it the norm. I commute 92 miles a day on interstates, major secondary arteries and single lane roads. I use adaptive cruise control almost all the time during my commute. Yes, idiots will swoop into the space and my vehicle slows down....I keep my cruise at 10 MPH over the speed limit. I have tested it many times by not using cruise on my commute and driving as much as 30 MPH over the speed limit for a limited period of time. Using cruise it takes me about 55 minutes. Not using cruise takes me about 52 minutes. That's 3 minutes a day or about 9.2 hours a year. The data suggests that using adaptive cruise control set to the surrounding flow of traffic speeds reduces the risk of accidents by half and ticketing by about 80%. 10 hours a year to reduce risks by 50% and 80% is a miniscule price to pay...one ticket would mean, at $74 an hour, that I would work about 3.5 times as many hours to pay the fine and increased insurance costs. It is safer and far more efficient...what do I care if someone "swoops" in and I slow down some...my goal is to get to work and home again without an accident or a ticket, not outrunning every idiot on the road or staying in front of them at any cost....I can only control my actions, the actions of others is out of my control and therefore of very little interest to me...let the idiots 'swoop" in....and live a long healthy life without getting all worked up over shite you can't control....

Folks hate cameras but I would MUCH rather get a ticket from a camera than have to interact with an agent of the state on the side of the road. I have never had a camera be a smart arse to me...I have had some interactions with state employees who were worse than a smart arse. Cameras don't have bad days, have no irrational fears, ain't mad because their wife doesn't blow them as often as they'd like....cameras are to cops what a well cooked ribeye is to a pile of dog shite...they are simply better.
Cameras simply work. The data is overwhelming. Why there is so much push back is insane. So what if someone sees you eating boogers....maybe don't eat boogers you nasty bastard. Cameras work and like them or not they are everywhere and spreading like locusts...you have no expectation of privacy in public spaces, never have had...and you certainly have no right to operate a machine which is responsible for 36,000 deaths a year without any regard to yours or anyone's safety. Cameras work. We certainly need massive amounts more of them.
