Some terrible show my girlfriend watches explained it best:

Well to do grandmother: "So, tell me about your new career. What is a social media influencer"

Female character: "Well companies give me products to show off on my instagram and tik tok and they pay me to do it"

WTDGM: (somewhat disappointed) "so you're a sales person then".

FC: "Well, no, its different. I just make videos and posts and every once in a while talk about the product"

WTDGM: (visibly disappointed) "dear, youre a sales person"

Correct, as long as the influencer is up front about it. Many are.

More power to someone who can eek out a living on social media.

A person who posts things on social media to get attention. They use that attention to sell or advertise things for money. They do so using their influence. Thus they are called "influencers".

TBH about 10% of influencers are probably worthy of it. Some of them can be very educational or have subject matter expertise. A lot of gun/outdoor/etc. channels are run by what I'd call meritorious influencers.

I might argue the worst thing about influencer culture aren't the influencers, but the mimicking they generate. "Normal" people adopting the idea that they need to be constantly creating content (note, this isn't content, it's just useless shite) because it's what influencers do.

For the most part, they are extremely narcissistic people who make money off of their extreme narcissism. Most of the time its hot chicks who post softcore porn of themselves, or photos of them in trendy or beautiful places. There really isn't anything special, or unique about these people.

My girlfriend's works on their campaigns. The ones that drive the most sales are not who you think they are. It's typically mommy bloggers

I wouldn't say that. I would say that an influencer is more or less like a commercial, but with actual testimony behind it. The influencer actually uses/used said product/service. Their opinion in most cases holds more weight than an advertisement.

I believe it is someone that uses their social media platform to influence. Or something like that
