Can someone explain what the end game is to return to normalcy?

Seriously, what’s the plan? I keep seeing arbitrary dates of suspended services as if anyone has a clue when things will return to normal. Are we waiting for the bell curve to flatten? And then what?

Likely a slow, gradual return to normalcy. A removal of restrictions over time in the order they were placed I would think.

Need to get a vaccine. Probably won't ever eradicate it, but can hopefully mitigate it with a vaccine.

The endgame is the confusing part for me. Some people think hot weather will slow down the transmission and we can get back to normal. There is no proof of that so far. Even if it did slow down it will likely return next winter.
Wont the curve just blow up again when the restrictions are lifted?
Feels like our only hope is some genius in a lab finds a vaccine sooner than later.
