They aren’t legal in Texas. In OK they tell the public where they will be and when. Idiots still get DUIs at the checkpoints.

Thousands of people across the country dying each year from drunk drivers is apparently more egregious than millions of unverified people electing our representatives to govern over us. Make it make sense.

WTF?
Make sense? You just compared thousands of horrific deaths to elections?

If one of your loved ones or a friend is killed by a drunk driver you might be changing your incredibly retarded take.

A random request of your 'Papers'...hmmm, where had this been used?

I suppose you would have no problem in being confronted in a shopping mall and ask for your driver's license or birth certificate? How about for your children? Could you provide your social security number please?

Attack a straw man much???

They have to announce them ahead of time in some states and avoiding them is not probable cause to pull someone over

In order for a DUI checkpoint to pass legal scrutiny, most courts require that the operation is reasonable in both its creation and execution. A state authority must call for the checkpoint and must provide a logical reason regarding why the sobriety checkpoint is necessary at a particular location. After concluding that the government official possessed a logical basis for imposing the DUI checkpoint, courts explore a series of criteria regarding the execution of the checkpoint.

First, supervising law enforcement officials must select the location of the checkpoint and the procedures to be used. In other words, a group of police officers simply cannot decide to block a public road for the purpose of conducting randomized alcohol screening tests. The DUI checkpoint must be advertised in advance of the actual event so that the public has prior notice that the checkpoint will occur at a particular time and place.

Next, drivers must be selected for screening according to a neutral formula. An officer cannot simply stop a driver at a DUI checkpoint. Instead, the driver must exhibit a behavior included on a list of indicators, like swerving, speeding, appearing to be drunk, slurred speech, or an odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath.

Wow, cant believe im actually agreeing with you .. something something even a broken clock’s right twice a day or whatever .

Actually id go a step further- ive never understood why it’s legal to have even one drink and then get behind the wheel of a 3,000 lb weapon .. maybe yall would feel different if you’d seen all the destruction and death and absolute mayhem ive seen caused by drinking and driving in my almost 47 years of life … ESPECIALLY now with Uber/Lyft so easily available .. those services didnt exist ‘in my day’…. Order an Uber, designate a driver, walk to the bar, drink at home… there’s no reason in 2025 to have even one sip of beer then drive a vehicle .

After 9 pm, about 10% of drivers are impaired.

Why am I X-rayed at the airport?

I’m not equating drunk-driving deaths with elections. Governments have caused or enabled harm on a scale far beyond individual crimes: wars based on bad intelligence, segregation, internment camps, COINTELPRO, Tuskegee, you name it. If we accept ID for driving, a privilege, it’s not crazy to verify identity for voting, a right. Both have consequences, but in scale they’re in completely different ball parks.

Yep. I posted "don't drink and drive ever and you don't have issues" and got downvoted. People love to drink and drive.

Anyone who drinks and drives today with how much the penalty is and UBER is a freaking RETARD.

A DUI in Texas will cost you : estimates suggesting around $17,000. The total cost includes legal fees, fines, court costs, and surcharges, as well as indirect costs like increased insurance premiums, towing and storage fees, and the potential installation of an ignition interlock device.

Driving is a privilege not a right

I can fly on a plane, but to do so I have to allow law enforcement officers to search me, I can drive a car but I have to allow law enforcement officers to randomly test me to verify I’m not intoxicated. It doesn’t seem all that different.

Exactly- it's a fundraising opportunity.

Public safety disappeared from the conversation decades ago and the PR remains.

Yeah, and im not even *necessarily* arguing for being pro-DUI checkpoint.. my thing is i just dont understand the appeal of drinking & driving … i dont drink much anymore, but back when i used to imbibe on the regular, i cant even count how many times i said ‘ok, ill go out and only have a beer, or two’.. and then wind up throwing down 4 or 5.. and id driven to the bar so of course i drove home .. im a fairly self-confident guy, yet i dont trust myself a whole lot to stop at a beer, or two, or even three.. and i know i cant be the only one who’s a terrible judge of when ‘enough is enough .’

If you want true ‘freedom’- to me that would be calling an Uber to start the evening, that way you arent even tempted to drive later and take chances with DUIs and accidents .

I agree that anyone who drinks & drives in 2025 is a retard.. but to be honest a DUI isnt even what occurs to me when i think about drinking and driving.. i always think about the fact that i might have one too many and then wipe out a family of four.. or maim or kill my self.. ive seen ALL those things happen multiple times in my lifetime .

It's not about public safety. It's about maximizing revenue pulling over whoever they can at thousands dollars/stop. This is a fundraising activity.
