It goes a long way back in Louisiana history, you see back in the day Andrew Jackson came to Louisiana to defeat the British and he didn’t have a full professional army so he recruited local men to form a militia to bolster the forces he already had. He was looking for a name to call them to distinguish them from his regular soldiers so to honor their bravery and cohesion he called them the “baws” short for blacks, Amerindians, and whites, the original groups that settled Louisiana
