I will admit to being frustrated with it at first myself when I was helping the grandkids, but they don't seem to have much problem with it. I definitely think it will help them understand orders of magnitude, which is sorely missing in our society.
What is the point of this? If they have to write all that shite out, I would imagine that only increases the amount of time it takes them to have to do it & teach them.

wtf is up with you idiots and all these extra steps?
Well yeah, I know 19 + 19 = 38 simply because of rote memorization.
But if I were doing, say, 162 + 127 in my head, my process would be along the same lines.
100 + 100 = 200
62 + 27 = 89
200 + 89 = 289

God your threads continue to be garbage.

Common Core math catches a lot of unwarranted flak. Most people who excel in math are doing the same things in their mind that common core tries to teach. It is laborious to start, but if you learn math that way in the beginning, you're better off in the long run.
I understand it's frustrating to parents who never learned in that manner, but we shouldn't do something inefficiently just because we've always done it that way.

Yes. Evidently they have to write it out a certain way. From what I gathered, it is suppose to help with critical thinking..
That's what I gather as well.
I'll admit I'm not the brightest. I'm 30 and going back to school using veterans benefits.
I was lazy in highschool and took the minimum.
I swear MAT 005 (basic college algebra) last semester, was the same stuff my son was doing.
Now that I know that, he will be in every math class available.
I'm glad I have this opportunity to educate myself, and know what to do, so he won't be lost at 30.
However, you, I, and everyone else knows that education books are worthless after three years and new information is pushed out.

Yeah, that's great for kids who started with common core from the beginning. It's not so great for kids who were in, say, 4th grade when the state switched to common core. They got a big mindfrick. Just like parents who learned math the traditional way and are now trying to help their kids do it the common core way.
If I know LA public education as well as I think I know it, the parents will complain enough to cause the LDOE to drop common core and go back to traditional. At that point, all the kids who started with common core get the mindfrick.

Look at something like "partial sums" addition. This is infinitely easier than the "traditional" way of carrying the one and all that other BS.
You're much more likely to find the total in your head with this method than you would with the traditional approach of starting with the ones digits.

I assume add 300+100, 40+70, and 8+7.

In my wife's class they have to use all these damn 10 charts and shite. They actually have to draw the charts and dots and all that crap....She teaches 1st grade....I told her she was contributing to lowering the age at which people (parents and kids) start having mental breakdowns
Although I have seen that it does easily separate the future idiots from the kids that actually will probably progress and do well in school/life. She has had to teach at least half the parents of students in her class how the 10 charts work

You talking about Common Core? I've seen my niece's homework. Had no clue what was going on

It teaches things that people who are good with numbers "just get".
Like, a poster above mentioned 20+20=40 40-2=38.
This is correct. I grew up doing this a bunch and was always the kid who was good with numbers.
But I always spelled it as "American populace". "Populous" is also a word but not correct in this context.

Let's say you have 19 + 19.. 9 + 9 is 18, 1+1 = 2 +1 from the 18.. You have 38. How else would you teach this?

Common Core is pretty weak. It's taught poor.y. Of course, it's taught by teachers - the group most responsible for making America dumber, so there's no surprise there.
The real problem is in things like algebra where they are trying to muck with order of operations, and how you define a 'term' etc.

Had to go there. Parents who have never lifted a finger to prepare their children for entrance to school hold no accountability. Those kids are behind from the start, and most never catch up. Keep blaming the easy target.
