What's the big deal with math in grade school these days? Someone was trying to explain to me that they do it a new way in which they don't carry the numbers and it has to be done a "certain way".

Let's say you have 19 + 19.. 9 + 9 is 18, 1+1 = 2 +1 from the 18.. You have 38. How else would you teach this?

This other math thread made me think about this.

This made my head hurt.

10 + 10 = 20
9 + 9= 18

20 + 18 = 38

ETA: Are you talking about when doing addition mentally, or on paper?

20+20 = 40

40-2 = 38

So if you see 19 + 19 you would do it in your head by adding 10 + 10= 20 then 9 + 9 = 18, add them together and you get 38?

You wouldn't just know that 9 + 9=18. So you have 8, then you add the 1 with the other 2 1s.. And BOOM it's 3... 38?

My kid is in first grade and they do make easy shite complicated.

I assume that is what you meant.

As a parent just follow the directions and explain it so your kid understands it.

Yes. Evidently they have to write it out a certain way. From what I gathered, it is suppose to help with critical thinking..

frick dude. They have my 8 year old trying to do everything in 10's. like 35 + 17 you gotta break that shite up in to the following:

First:
30 + 10 = 40

Second
5 + 7 = 12

Well 12 is divisible by 12 so you gotta take that 10 out of the 12 and add it to 40 to get 50. Then you add the fricking 2.

The kicker is you have to show your work. Basically drawing a fuggin map to it or you lose points.

Common core is about blocking and bundling groups of tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.

Common core. Pictures. Number lines. It's very trying on the patience.

The common core math states that you group numbers and it is supposed to make math easier. It teaches things that people who are good with numbers "just get".

Like, a poster above mentioned 20+20=40 40-2=38.

That is the way people who are "good with numbers" do math in their head. However, you cannot simply teach that. It won't work, and the subsequent "dumbing down of the American populous" will continue until we either get rid of the Dept of Education, or we get more local control of the schools.

What is the point of this? If they have to write all that shite out, I would imagine that only increases the amount of time it takes them to have to do it & teach them.

That part is awful. It is not just showing your work, it is drafting a graphical representation of your work.

Introducing various methods is fine, but basic arithmetic should not be so laborious.
