Every year I get the whole (green excess mucus, weak body/light fever) right around spring. The symptoms always last a week. Luckily it's only been once this year, I've had it more. It always happen at the worse time. I have an interview with MIT and Rice for an MBA and another interview for a petroleum engineering spot (yes subtle brag) this week. Can you do anything to stop it?

Claritin-D...it’ll clear your sinuses better than anything. But make sure it says D. The one you have to get from behind the counter. It might make you feel wired so don’t take it anywhere near bedtime.

That sounds like a basic sinus infection to me. Basically, you've gotta get that snot flowing again. Drink as much liquids as you can manage. Breathe moist air/steam from a hot shower and or vaporizer. Take a decongestant (as long as you don't have blood pressure problems.

You can either go to urgent care foer some antibiotics or just ride it out. Either way, it is not going to be gone by tomorrow.

Antihistamine daily like zyrtec, xyzal, or claritin (generic versions fine). Decongestant (anything with D in the name) is only necessary if you can't breathe through your nose, otherwise of little benefit.

Try saline irrigations - can very helpful to clear mucous. You can buy a kit (e.g. NeilMed) at any drugstore.

Avoid outside exposure as much as you can and always take your antihistamine if you are going to be outside. If you are outdoors much, take a shower and change your clothes when you get home to minimize your exposure to pollen. Consider buying a HEPA air cleaner for your bedroom.

In the long run, you might consider a referral for allergy testing. Immunotherapy can be very effective for long term allergy control but it takes time.

I used to get flu-like most years due to severe seasonal allergies. Went to The Allergy Clinic in Houston and got some testing (they do further testing than just the needle pricks...also some extra test shots in your arm to determine specific allergy levels). Once they determined I was a candidate we chose a date for me to get Rush Immunotherapy. One whole day, you get 9-10 months of shots depending on what your body can handle, prepare your system with a cocktail of allergy meds for a few days before and after and you are in their clinic under medical supervision. Then you may get a weekly shot for a bit depending on how far through the rush you go. Then you go straight to a monthly shot. Literally immediate relief for me.

I don’t live in Houston so my doc’s office signed off saying they would oversee my monthly shot. Clinic mails them the serums. Only have to go back to Houston once a year.

My dad finished the regimen in five years and hasn’t had any further issues. It’s taking me longer because I’m now on my second pregnancy and have to pull back to a lower dose maintenance shot until the baby is born, but it still helps. I only take Zyrtec on shot days since starting.

Insurance covered it as preventive. If Houston is just nowhere close for you look for another clinic that does the Rush.

As a side note, why would you go right out of undergrad to get an MBA from Rice or MIT? You would get way more out of it after a few years of work experience.

If you can get a petroleum engineering role (outside of a service company), that seems like a good way to go. You will still be a strong candidate in a few years, with a chance to learn the ropes of industry and financials in the meantime. And you can refine your interests. That will provide both direction and context for graduate work.

Best wishes with the opportunties and the allergies.
