With the corruption that runs rampant in Louisiana politics, can someone who's sick of it all and wants to run actually win?

I don’t know of any parish councilmen that aren’t average Joes. It’s not some prestigious seat

IDK how it works in y'alls neck of the woods, but in my home county, such a guy was polling ahead of the 20-year sheriff. His campaign manager fell down a flight of stairs and the guy dropped out.

Why would anyone want that headache? You get to deal with idiots like the 3 unmentionables and get called a racist because you want money raised in your district to stay in the district and not help fund another. It is an absolute no win situation.

You need a bank/fence. You need to be connected somehow...unless you are Trump and have as much money as an establishment does. This for parish president/mayor. You have to grease constantly.

City council? Just have a name. If your dad owned a big business that people loved, you can win.

Only if you feel like having your entire personal life, wife's life, kids' lives, and parent's lives out in the open for all to see. You better hope you didn't bully some kid in the first grade because they'll find them, too.

Back in the 70's some locals wanted my grandfather to run for Mayor. He was considering it when my grandmother told him he could stay married to her, or run for office, but he couldn't do both. He didn't run.

I want to run for parish council, but my councilman does a great job. I’ve already talked to him about his potential retirement date and have taken steps to gain his endorsement when that time comes. I think I can win because he’s highly regarded and we have similar view points.

I’m very much an average Joe.

Let's say one looks like Dark Helmet from Spaceballs, one has a dog food named after them and the last has never been to an all you can eat that he didn't shut down.

Easier than at the state or federal level, but it is still all about connections and money. And probably not for Parish President. Most people couldn't even name their councilperson. It would be a matter of getting yourself out there to the small percentage who actually vote in local elections. If there are enough people pissed at local government and you are making enough noise to get the word out, then yes. And you'd definitely have to find some contributors- ie local government contractors - and be ready to cater to them after you win. Even at the local level it comes down to $$$$$$$$$$.

That said, it happens.

I could not be on city council because I would barrage them...especially the latter 2. I work all day and then show up at CC and listen to their unemployed asses?

Honestly, yes.. Well maybe not so much Parish President, but parish council, city council. school board member.

You give me a registered voting list of the area you are running in and I promise you, at the least, I can advise you on how to become a "serious candidate".

That's the problem. I'm not even from Louisiana and presently I only have connections through my church. I live in Ascension btw, and lived out here long enough to see that our elected official are corrupt as hell. I want to run for Parish president. I've thought about it for a while, and what happened yesterday was the icing on the cake for me.

We are talking about parish council, not congress

Husky you have my vote...but do not let the baw stigma of your parish fool you. There are oily sons of bitches in that parish. Look at the verdict from yesterday.

A church...like a megachurch? You need to get in good with the HP and Church International people. Ministers and preachers tell their congregations how to vote...especially those with low-income and minimally educated ones. I do not have a thing to do with said types...just have observed their powers over people from a far.

You can try that angle. But everyone will expect everything in return if you won.
