Nikon D5600

I bought a predecessor, the D5300 and the build quality is horrible. I sold it within 6 months and got a Fujifilm. The Nikon kit lenses are not good quality either.

If she was published in magazines as you say, she will likely be underwhelmed with a crop frame camera. Unfortunately, you will need to exceed the $1K budget for a full frame camera, unless you go with a body only deal. Doesn't sound like she has lenses already so that would be a waste.

Was just about to suggest the d5600 that one is available in a bundle with two lenses for well under $1000 I'm pretty sure it's 24 mp and wifi. Best buy has a ton of options with an info chart to find exactly what you need in the camera aisle

All of this, you are going to end up buying something she will be replacing very soon. $1k isn't going to get her what she needs/ wants and if she gets back into this hobby, she is getting ready to spend some serious money

Most crop sensors are fine and you'll never see a difference until you start shooting high ISO pics, or extreme dynamic ranges

She's well aware of what is available in that price range that she hinted at.

You'd be surprised what she was shooting with in the past that was getting her published. It was a Canon point and shoot of some type, not an SLR, no interchangeable lenses. Something that was probably around $600 15 years ago.

People still buy stand alone cameras?

1. Buy from B&H. They’re tax-free because they’re physically only located in New York. It’s hard to find anyone who can beat them on price.

2. Buy a Canon or Nikon. I use a Canon and all Canon brand lenses, but neither of the two is superior to the other. Anyone who says differently is just being a fanboy of their brand.

3. Buy a crop-sensor. Unless you are intending to make money off of your photography as your primary source of income you do not need a full frame, which is bigger, heavier, and much more money.

4. Buy a body and a separate prime lens. Do not buy a kit. Kit lenses blow goats. You will quickly discover this and realize you wasted money by paying more for a kit when you should have started investing in decent primes. Zooms have lower image quality and hamper your ability to develop good composition skills. You can zoom with your feet using a higher image quality prime and learn a lot more about composition that will pay dividends later.

If I were looking to get something to start getting into real photography for under $1,000 total, that will produce nice images that will really get you hooked on the hobby, I’d get a Canon 77D body and an Canon 50mm f1.8 prime. That’ll be like $900something total from B&H, no tax, free shipping.

started a thread last week about this on the tech board and got great advice. DSLR THREAD

Went with the Canon 7D. 10 frames per second for shooting sports and less costly than the 5D Mark IV. You can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon kit camera.

Yep, no need for full frame or massive Mps unless she's putting stuff on buildings in Times Sq.

Many pros shoot with crops at least part of the time.

Well, then, I'd suggest the D5600 bundle, but I'm a Nikon fan. Not even sure what the Canon model is in that price range. As someone said, you can pick it up at Best Buy right now. That bundle should come with a warranty...Don't bother with that geek squad crap. It's worth less than crap covered toilet paper.

Not under your $1k but you can get a Canon 6D body for $1,500. I have had one for several years and it is Canon quality and capabilities at less than half the cost of the 5D series.

Cooter was right about picking her up the 50mm prime to start. The lens is $125 and you would think it is crap for that price but it is what I shoot most of my photos with. I have several multi thousand dollar lenses and I still use that "nifty 50" more than any other. So, for $1,700, you can get her into a system that she can grow with and will do absolutely anything she wants.

I disagree.

In fact these two are falling behind on mirrorless which is the wave of the future.

Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax all offer as good a product in the entry and mid range classes, at the least. Fujifilm kit lenses are the best in the business.

They’re super nice and feature in camera image stabilization (unlike in lens a la Nikon and Canon) and are smaller and lighter than a DSLR, but the ones that produce DSLR equivalent image quality are expensive as hell.

You can get a decent mirrorless for 600-700.

I've moved on from DSLR, the EVF on mirrorless produces the exact image you'll see on your computer unlike the optical viewfinder of DSLRs

But they’re very limited on lenses and most of their users end up buying quality-reducing adaptors in order to use Canon DSLR lenses.

I’m not a fan of kit lenses, but to each his own.

For under $1000 you won’t get the most badass cameras, but I like the Canon 70d. Sony A6300 is a nice little camera too. Maybe not quite as good as the Canon but much smaller. Either one should leave you a few bucks for a decent prime lens.

Looks like it's coming down to Roger vs Cooter.

Both make very compelling cases.

I’m really not trying to argue with him. His points are all totally valid. He isn’t wrong. It’s a personal preference.
