Getting back into photography. Looking to update my Canon 30D to something better and faster for sports and action wildlife. Does anyone have an info on caparing full frame or staying with cropped?
Currently looking at the 7D vs the 6D.

Reach out to Competitive Cameras on Irving Blvd in Dallas, TX. Email/speak to Eugene. Old school mom and pop, brick and morter type of place. One of the top camera dealers in the country. The guy took over his Dads business, and started in the camera business behind the counter in his mommas womb.
I'm a Nikon, and Olympus guy though, so I don't pay attention much to the canon end of the counter when I go in.

Spend the money on the 5D Mark IV. It will turn your images into professional looking works instantly. How's your glass collection?

Man a remember when that Mark II changed the industry with that HD video addition. Had Nikon hard core traditionalist becoming a bunch of traders. Sad.
Yeah, OP, any EF-S lens you have for your 30D wont work on that full frame MIV.

Yeah im to much of a purest to try to put cheaper ef-s glass on a MIV. Stick to cheaper small frame if low quality is wanted. If you are going to get into that level then step it up. If it's not a redline, metal mount it wouldn't touch a camera like a MIV.
I try to stay away from non mfg stuff. Some 2nd lens are solid, and fit. Like Tamron, and Tokina. Hell the small frame Tokina 11-16/2.8 should be a must have for any small frame Nikon or canon photographer.

Havel a couple of pieces of glass that are good for 30 D but now I’m not sure if they would work on full frame. Making lens for shooting with his will be the one hat come with it and my 70-200 f/2.8. So those won’t work on the full frame sensor? Also the 5d mark I’ve is twice as much. I like the @2k range so I can add a lens shortly.

OP..confirm the type of glass you do have from your 30D. That actually is a good start as HubbaBubba asked.
If you are just starting to get back in, I would start with a small frame like 7D, and use the difference of a full fram on getting the best glass. As glass will be a bigger part of the shot you are looking for in action and sports shots. So 70-200/2.8 IS is what you would want to put the money into. If you find yourself really getting back into in a few yrs you've invested in the right glass to step it up to full frame.
Now if you dont have much invested in glass now then it's the time to look at other options like Nikon. Glass is historically better, but pricier. BUT 5 year mfg warranty over 1 year canon has. I like the warranty in case I feel it needs to be recalibrated a few yrs in.

This is definitely me getting back into it. Want something that’s a step up in a little faster than what I have. If I stick with it which I plan to I will have something to utilize later on. I want to get some great shots of my daughters teams, some great wildlife and landscapes and family stuff for my own enjoyment. I like my 30 d and would continue to use that on some things. I think a better Glass collection would be beneficial and if that translates to better set up in 5 years that would be great. I am a Canon guy so will stick with that.

Ha. Just crossed each other on that. So yeah your 70-200 should work. Red line lens is canons top of the line, so you it'll work on small and full.
I would stick to getting the best canon small frame which is in your range, invest in more red lines as you go, and if you think yrs from now you want to add a full frame to your bag then go for it. Need to knock that rust off your shutter button finger. LOTS has changed since that 30D. LOTSSSS.
Ultimately you want to get /2,8 f-stop lens to capture action with a telescopic lens. Lowest f-stop you'll find on a telescopic. Set mm then you can go down f stop wise, but I dont really see you wanting to get into all that price wise yet. But yeah for what you want you have the right lens. I think canon is 1.5 on the small frame, so that 70-200 is really a 105-300mm in small frame. So technically you want that lens on a small frame to extend the distance out further. Essentially losing distance from your 30D if you put it on a full frame, which may not be what you want. Add new shutter speeds of today vs your 30D to your 70-200 and you are going to be a pig in shite. Ha! Seriously though look at the Tokina I mentioned for your wide lens speed lens. it's the closest you can get to putting nikon glass on a canon.
Seriously reach out to my guy here in Dallas. Dude is an Oracle of Photography. He'll ship. He's a B2B dealer with a retail side, so all that pro knowledge comes with talking to him. Become a good customer that isnt one of those comparing on-line prices type, and you got the best in the biz at your finger tips to help out. Heck I'll send him a pic that is just off, cant figure out what I did wrong, and he'll tell me what setting I should have used, if my lens is soft, or if I need to come in to get my sensor cleaned. He's the guy you can go to when you are wanting to get into different types of stuff too. Like when I wanted to get into fireworks a few yrs back I went in, and we chatted for an hour on settings and tips.

Awesome. The Chevy vs Ford of photography. Ha. Yeah my dad was a Nikon guy. Photography Mags everywhere, and bathroom reading material. Ha!
Yeah. definitely the small frame, and slap that 70-200 on it.
Is it the IS version? May need to get a mono-pod if you dont have one if it isnt. Heck I hike with a camera on a monopod, so IS or not a solid 100 investment. I also always pick-up a cheap less than $20, or cheaper if I find something marked down, monopod for when i'm out in a messy spot or walking out into the ocean with my waterproof Olympus. Rather throw it away when it's rusted out then pay for the high end Gitzo version.

For shooting action, the 7D would be my choice. Shutter speed range is far better and has a better AF system. For shooting at night, the 6D. ISO range is where the larger sensor will make a difference.
7D Mk III is supposed to come out before summer.

Thank you. Your info helps a lot. That is where I was leaning but you confirmed. I appreciate it.

You are welcome. I dont nerd out on much, but when I do I do. As you can tell. Ha.
I texted my buddy on the 7D MIII coming out, and late '18 would be surprising. Most likely '19. Traditionally canon/nikon send a first batch in to the states which are the hardest to get your hands on. My buddy usually gets a higher # in than most. Up there with B&H in first patch amounts, but he only does photography stuff. it's pretty cool to see when new things come in. He could charge a lot higher, but he's loyal to his loyal customers.
Yrs ago he told me he was getting one of like 3, first batch of the new Nikon 600mm/f4 coming into the US. $15k range or something. Anyway he had 2 customers that wanted it bad. He told them he is going to text them the moment he signs off for the delivery that week. The first person in gets it. Ha!!! Could have made more money letting them bid on it, but not his style. It was funny. I knew when it was coming in, so I could come by, and take a look at it once the new owner opened the box of course. Ha.
Anyway, I asked my buddy the price on the MII while I was asking about the MIII status. He has the MII body for $1,550 atm. So your call if you want to wait for the MIII.

I shoot a 7d mark II, usually paired with a 70-200f/2.8 IS and occasionally use a 1.4x teleconverter. The 63 auto focus points and the 10 fps are amazing.

Have you checked out the 80D? It is a crop sensor, but has great AF, fast shutter speed, and good dynamic range. Here are some pics I've taken with mine. All handheld

The 30d and 70-200 2.8 is a sweet setup. I still use my 30d all the time shooting outdoor sports and I’m using a crappy (compared to the 70-200) Sigma 18-125 Noah brought over on his ark.

I like the 30d outdoors with it. It’s indoors that I struggle with the 30d. The ISO only goes to 1600 and I have to shoot at 160to catch anything. In poor light it is not good. I want to increase my iso range to help along with the 10f/sec burst should be able to get much better shots. The video aspect is really just an extra for me.
