Ice cream company Ben & Jerry's sparked outrage with a July 4th tweet calling for the United States to return 'stolen indigenous land' starting with giving Mount Rushmore back to the Lakota Sioux tribe.

The company, which was founded by longtime Bernie Sanders allies Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenwood but has since been sold to British multinational Unilever, tweeted the message to its 494,000 followers.

'This 4th of July, it's high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it,' the company's official account wrote before suggesting Mount Rushmore should be handed back to its original owners.

The tweet sparked immediate outrage on social media, with many disgusted customers using the #boycottbenandjerrys hashtag to slam the message as anti-American sentiment on a day meant to celebrate the United States.

Yeah, it's funny they chose to first propose a piece of land 1,800 miles away from the stolen land on which THEY reside.

Unlike the consumers of bud light, most of the Ben and Jerry eaters either support the company philosophy or really just don’t care much about things like this.
I don’t see this boycott having much of an effect. They have been very liberal and shared views much worse than this example over many years

A common theme throughout history. Conquerors and the conquered.

They couldn’t keep their land? Tough stuff.

Some land can reasonably be argued to be stolen, but a lot was either ignored by indigenous people or was sold at a price both sides considered fair.

100% sure they were not the 'original' owners.

If you're not already boycotting Ben & Jerry's then you haven't been paying attention for the past decade.

It's awesome how these types of people will always have you believe that all the different indian tribes coexisted peacefully with no wars or conquests of their own. When in reality they were regularly slaughtering each other and changing their borders.

I’ve been boycotting them since I first tried it. It’s completely and entirely overrated. Just like Starbucks.

So a British company is telling the US they need to give back land.

How about they give Australia back to the aborigines first and then worry about what we do.
