My niece, 11y 9m, has a history of hemiplegic migraines. She had one Monday and ended up in the ER. No admit. Today she is having migraine symptoms.

We already gave her a dose of Motrin about 9:30 PT. How soon before we can give a dowe if Tylenol.

She has a neuro appointment scheduled, but this is faster than calling her doc.
Thanks guys.

3 hours.

I'm not a doc but I have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express as last resort before.

Motrin and Tylenol are different meds. You don’t have to worry about timing of one to dose the other.

Only the interval between Motrin doses or Tylenol doses is important.

Thank yall so much. We talked to nurse line. We’re giving it about 20 minutes and if she’s not better heading to the urgent care based at the main hospital. They have imaging and stuff there if we need it.

You can give Motrin and Tylenol at the same time.

You generally want to stagger Ibuprofen and Tylenol. So if the dose is 200mg of ibuprofen every six hours, take the Motrin now, then take Tylenol 3 hours from now, and so on.

Poor baby. The first time couple times she ended up inpatient for a couple of days to rule out anything more serious.

Now she has the “marching symptom” starts in her hand then her arm. Monday she her symptoms cycled thru about 3 times but they were less severe than before.

Today she has headache with aura (normal for her migraines), numb hand and her tongue went a little numb, but she says she’s starting to feel better.

All the women on both sides get migraines. So I’m afraid she may have a rough time if it.

Really hoping she can mostly grow out of it when puberty finishes.

There are plenty of prescription treatment options that help prevent migraines and treat them acutely. If migraines are gonna be a thing for her it may be time to start discussing options with a doctor. I don't recall offhand if or which ones have a pediatric indication. I'm also not a doctor but do work in the pharma industry.

Thanks 777. We’re going to get a genetic test when she sees her neuro to see if there is a genetic issue

Finally getting her to rest and maybe get some sleep. That’s always good for her.

Poor baby, what a rotten spring break.

Right now she takes
Sertraline for OCD and she takes magnesium, B2 and hydroxyzine at night to help treat her migraines.

This is her first hemiplegic a in over a year. She gets a migraine about every 3 or 4 months.

So, it’s been 20 minutes, but it looks like shes fallen asleep. We don’t want to wake her, so we’re going to see if she can sleep it off.
If not, we’ll deal with it then.

Thanks so much guys. I really appreciate it.

Not sure if we have the same kind but I get Migraines. When my prescription of Maxalt doesn’t work, the local walk in clinic gives me a shot that contains Toridol and anti nausea medication and that knocks mine out.

That’s rough.

I dealt with migraines as a kid too, probably from around 10 to 15. No idea what triggered them, but I’d get one at least once a month. Aspirin and Tylenol didn’t help at all. Excedrin Migraine helped a bit, but I could usually feel them coming on about an hour in advance.

When that happened, I’d retreat to a cool, quiet, pitch-black place, sometimes even a closet, with a cold rag over my head. The first hour or two was just brutal, writhing pain. Eventually I’d throw up, and only then would it start to ease off.

This won’t help, but I sympathize.

The last time we had to take her to the ER, before Monday, they gave her some Toridol. Monday they gave her nausea meds, but she threw up anyway. It’s part of her process I think.

It’s headache, sleep, throw up, sleep, wake up sassy and ask for dinner.

Right now we are in the Motrin induced sleep stage. She’s all cuddled up on her mom and holding woobie. And got her little girl snore going on.

Hey Klark. That does help. It reminds us that we’re not alone. When we got migraines as a kid, even into adulthood, we just had to suck it up. Now, we know better and we’re doing our best with her.

Her room is the coolest in the house, it’s nice and quiet down here and we have her drapes pulled. We’ll be putting up black out drapes tomorrow.

She deals with lots of anxiety and OCD. We’re doing our best to keep her stress levels low and try to treat quickly when they happen.

Hopefully they will put on her on a preventative and also meds for when she does get one to help.
My wife has dealt with migraines for years and has been getting Botox treatments which helps alot.
best of luck to her would suck to be teenager dealing with them.

I’ve had migraine with aura on and off for 20 years and ended up getting a rash of them (3-4 in a week) two years ago. They took me off my estrogen based BC and put me on a beta blocker with suspicion either hormones (peri) or HBP was triggering them. I haven’t had any in that time frame.

I wonder if being in puberty could be triggering them for her?

Hey Belle…we definitely think that puberty is the primary trigger.

She’s also quite high strung, has some OCD tendencies and is a perfectionist/type A. We try to keep her stress level down and work on the other stuff. But sometimes just gets too overstimulated, as she says. We try to really jump into action then, but occasionally it’s just too much for her.

She just woke up from a 2 hour nap. She said her headache is gone and she feels much better. She just wants to take it easy and snuggle with her mommy today. That we can do.
