Probably took too long to show up because they were adding Freezon to the AC system.

I once worked in an ER in the city. From time to time people would be brought in with a complaint of chest pain. When they would arrive they would admit that they said chest pain because an ambulance would get there quicker. The really wanted to come in for their chronic back pain or other non emergencies.

I’m no expert in emergency medical response and the appropriateness of its uses, but I have noticed a significant change from 30 years ago in this:
Universities and bars routinely call for ambulance transports for students who pass out while drunk. This happens nightly, and multiple times per night over the weekend and holidays.
This rarely ever happened when I was in college. Now, perhaps it wasn’t safe in the past, and there are surely times when this new method has saved a person’s life, but this one change has created a massive increase in demand for ambulance services for mostly non-life threatening situations.

The problem in NOLA and BR is an entire generation has been conditioned to 911 equals free services. Head aches, stomach aches, some free a/c because it’s hot in they house. A free ride across town to go shopping. And mind you this entire generation pays next to zero in taxes so it’s one of if not the biggest burden on the financial system of the local government. But no politician will tell them no. No politician will do we stopping these money draining calls which will reduce staffing and save millions we could invest in schools or infrastructure. Gotta give the free hand outs so they’ll pull that handle next election.

I’m okay with this. I’d be pissed if I had an emergency and the cops were rushing to check out a broken window instead of assisting something important
One time I accidentally locked my dog in my truck and they just didn’t show up. I had to end up calling Pop-a-lock.

Get rid of it and let Acadian run the show
I understand the point, but as someone who's worked private and public I can assure you, overall, public is much better for the citizens. I worked NOLA ems for a brief stint pre Katrina also.

Calls from universities and most bars probably mean paying customers/ insurance

Pop a lock should have been your first call not the police. I’m glad they didn’t show up.

Do you call the cops for everything?

Yes it is. And the next generation is standing there just watching and learning. The problem will only get worse.

Acadian prioritizes interfacility transports over 911 calls because they're guaranteed to be paid
I can assure you that this is not the case,,,,when NOLA EMS calls for back up, if we have units available, we send them. I can also assure you in areas where we do both non emergency and 911, 911 calls have priority.
Challenge me on this, I was in the Comm Center last week.
